M&M's® Red Velvet Surprise Cookies Recipe

It's Valentine's season again and every year it seems that it gets longer and more complicated, so I've created a unique recipe that is SUPER easy to create but will make you look like a rockstar when giving it to someone you love! The basic concept is that love should be sweet, fun, surprising, and maybe even a little bit sticky.

That sounds just like the classic red velvet cake and so when I learned that Walmart had the exclusive on the new Red Velvet M&M's® and they were looking for fun recipes I got pretty excited!

To get the ingredients for the recipe I headed to my local Walmart where I found the new Red Velvet flavor in the seasonal candy section. This was also right next to the other seasonal colors of M&M's® Peanut and Milk Chocolate flavors along with DOVE® Promises.

After loading up on M&M's® I headed over to the grocery section and got everything else I needed.

Normally, I like to make things from scratch but this time I decided to just go ahead and use pre-made cookie dough since and since I was planning to doctor it up I don't consider this cheating :)  However, feel free to do it from scratch if you want.

Raspberry Red Velvet Surprise Cookie-Cake Ingredients:

  1. Heart-shaped Cookie Cutters (large and small)
  2. 1 tube of Pre-made Sugar Cookie Dough
  3. 1 can of Cream Cheese Frosting
  4. 3 tsp of Raspberry Extract
  5. 17 drops of Red Food Coloring
  6. 1 bag of Red Velvet M&M's®
  7. 1 bag of Peanut M&M's®

Instructions:

Mix the cookie dough, food coloring, and raspberry extract together in a glass bowl that won't stain. Add food coloring as needed. For me, I got the right consistency around 17 drops, but depending on your family's tolerance for red dye, you may want to go more or less. Be careful to not add too much since as you mix the dough you can find pockets of dye that haven't bee mixed in yet. Make sure that the coloring is consistent throughout, by cutting and folding the dough.

Your dough will thin because of the added liquid. Because of this, you may want to put it in the fridge to firm up 20-30 min, but this is not required.

Next, place your dough on parchment paper covering your baking pan and press it down using another piece of parchment paper and rolling pin or bottom of a large pan till it is about 1/4 inch thick.

Place the dough in the oven at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

Once you remove the cookies, quickly cut them using your cookie cutters but do not remove the dough that surrounds it till it has cooled and hardened.

Make sure that you have a ratio of 2 solid large hearts for every one that has a cutout in it. These large hearts will serve as the top and bottoms of your cookie-cake.

After the cookies have cooled completely you will ice the top of the bottom piece with your cream cheese frosting and place the middle on top of it, creating a pocket that you can fill with your Red Velvet M&M's®.

Next, ice the top of the middle cookie and place the top on top of that.

Next you will ice the top and sides of the cookie-cake as well as arrange a decorative heart of M&M's® around the top.

Now you've got a fantastic Valentine's Day treat to share with your friends and family that will both delight and impress.  Plus, no one needs to know how easy and quick it is, so that's our little secret!
