Missouri

  • Most guys who are new to wine think of iconic destinations like Napa and Sonoma as the places to go for wine. While I am a huge fan of California wines... the reality is that there are great wine regions all over the country. Some such as Lake Michigan Shore have gained prominence in recent years, while others such as the Snake River Valley AVA just west of Boise are lesser-known. What's great about these "undiscovered wine country" getaways is that they tend to be less expensive, more relaxed, and offer other opportunities to build a perfect getaway without making wine the singular focus.

  • The Mississippi River is a legendary maritime highway that allowed Midwestern states to prosper. From the 1800's to today, this river continues to generate incredible amounts of wealth leading to culturally diverse cities spanning it's 664 navigable miles. While not quite the romantic castles and palaces that you might find along European rivers, the Mississippi offers an opportunity to explore a different side of American history from a variety of angles including civil rights, food, music, industry, agriculture, and military heritage. I've had the fortune to explore nearly the entire length of this region on road trips but I can already tell you that traveling by boat would be the ultimate way to explore the "Mighty Mississip'!"

  • If there are two things that I love most in life - aside from my wife of course! It's traveling and discovering new local favorite foods. One area that continues to be on my bucket list - is Branson. There's a simple wholesome joy about this "Vegas of the Midwest" that draws my interest. So of course, when the folks at Silver Dollar City sent me their recipe for Their famous Ozark Mountain Succotash Family Fued Skillet... well, I just had to share it with you guys.

  • Ok, so this is a different sort of article. Typically I go explore fun new places and report back to you guys about all the fun stuff I saw and did. This time though, I'm writing about how I wish I had more than just a few hours to explore a new town but can't wait to go back again soon. Kansas City has been on my radar for a few years now. Unfortunately, a visit just hasn't come together for me. This time however I had a chance to fly in for a quick meeting and then spent a few hours driving around before heading to the airport. What I found was a surprisingly diverse, sports-obsessed town, with world-famous BBQ, and a pretty great craft beer scene too.

  • Ozark is one of my favorite shows on Netflix and I'm betting it is for a lot of you guys too. This a gripping crime saga set in Osage Beach, Missouri where the family relocates after having to leave Chicago. While sadly most of the show isn't actually shot here, there's no reason why we can't use this setting as a backdrop for a thrilling Ozark-themed Bachelor Party of our own.

  • People have always been obsessed with the unexplained and the paranormal. The U.S. is home to hundreds of eerie and equally tragic haunted places. Planning a mancation sometime soon? Make yours unique and exciting by making it a haunting holiday! Check out these amazing haunted places!

  • Looking for a place to take your sons on a family vacation mancation? Branson might just be the place you are looking for - plenty of fun, family friendly activities, and it is surprisingly easy to get to as well.

  • For those that have never visited Missouri, you might be shocked that I'm such a fan of the state. In fact, while Missouri might be simply dismissed by many as, "just another flyover state", the reality is that they've got a fantastic mixture of urban and rural things to do and see here. This includes great food and wine, an opportunity to travel back in time while traveling along Historic Route 66, or taking a riverboat cruise along the Mississippi River.

  • Hunting isn't the only excuse to pack up your backpack and head off into the woods with a few of your friends for a guys weekend. Sometimes it is great to simply enjoy nature by observing one of the most beautiful birds in the world. The American Bald Eagle is thankfully coming back strong thanks to conservation efforts across the country. Few birds match America's majestic bald eagle for inspiring awe. Winter is prime viewing season for these incredible raptors, which often are more visible against the backdrop of the season's sparse landscape. Head to a national wildlife refuge to try to spot an eagle on your own or, better still, head to one of these refuges for an organized tour!

Having seen these amazing birds in the wild, it is an experience that every man should see since these birds are as beautiful and graceful as they are amazing predators and they make amazing photography subjects too, so read on to see if there is a location near you...

  • When planning your next mancation, you may consider places where you can drink beer, watch sports, and generally hang out with the guys. What if I told you there was a hidden gem located in the middle of the United States that is just PERFECT for a mancation?

Would you guess that I am talking about St. Louis? With more than 20 breweries in town, professional sports teams, casinos, and great BBQ, St. Louis should be at the top of your list this year!

  • When most people think of touring Civil War battlefields, they think of the south and Mid-Atlantic, but the war made its way out west to Missouri too. As I learned last week, there are a lot of things that Missouri offers for a great guys weekend - stay tuned for more!
