Music, concerts, TV, movies, and other forms of entertainment
  • For the past several years, I have been a loyal subscriber and frankly a fan of Netflix. It was the first really solid response that answered those who pleaded for a genuine, legal alternative to pirating movies and TV shows. Today, it has grown from a dumping ground for "old stuff" into a first rate producer of quality original content that rivals anything found on traditional TV channels. July 1st is my father-in-law's birthday and even though computers and streaming video is something that isn't among his most comfortable skills I'm giving him a subscription to Netflix and a Roku to play it on.

You really don't need ten reasons why Netflix makes a great gift but I went through their catalogue to help him find stuff I know he will love to watch! The tough part was limiting my choices to just ten selections.

BTW, this is not a sponsored post. I just love Netflix and am excited to give him something that I know he will love.

  • The Internet has been abuzz with talk of this week's big movie opening, the latest release from the Marvel Studios. This, of course, is the second installment in the Avengers franchise, sequel to the third highest grossing film of all time, and we got a chance to see it earlier this week. Will it live up to the hype?

  • In the old days (not even 10 years ago!) it was simple, grab a pair of earbuds and you were set for listening to music. Today though, the options are limitless and major brands have dominated the market with audio products that are good, but frankly look and sound as if they were churned out of a corporate machine - rather than expressing the individual style of the wearer. That's where V-Moda comes in - and was designed by Val Kolton, a Chicago DJ who was inspired by the unique vibe found in Ibiza and the haute couture he found in LA.

Today, V-Moda products are designed to match both the discriminating style of the fashionista as well as the audiophile. Instead plastic parts, these headphones use industrial strength metal.

  • OMG guys - I am a HUGE FAN of the Carnival Live program and it just keeps getting better. As you know, last year we joined Carnival for Styx, followed by Jewel and both were amazing experiences. Now, they are adding The Band Perry, BOSTON, Lionel Richie, and Heart to their already awesome lineup. that has included Journey, Styx, Rascal Flatts, Little Big Town, and Smokey Robinson earlier this year.

  • Mancations are special - it's an opportunity to bring your guy friends together to help solve problems in your life and lend support. What often happens as well as that you get some great memories and build stronger bonds between you and your friends.

That's what these movies are about. While some may be more raunchy than others, at the end it's all about coming together and improving our lives.

  • Can you believe it? Guardians of the Galaxy is finally coming out on DVD and Blu-Ray on December 9 and you can pick it up - along with all sorts of awesome toys and action figures at Walmart to make the movie watching experience event greater.

These movies are bigger than just films to watch - they are indeed entertainment phenomena to wrap awesome merchandise around such as books, soundtracks, action figures, and other toys. To celebrate, I decided to step back in time and create my own adventure using some of the action figures from the movie... just like I did when I was a kid.

  • Poker night or a guys night out at the bar drinking and smoking... those are usually the only two options that I hear but I have an alternative idea. How about a guys movie night?

  • The band that spawned such iconic songs as "Girls, Girls, Girls" and "Kick Start My Heart", and the arena anthem "Home Sweet Home" and a dozen or more 80's and 90's smashes made a very rare appearance at a small venue last weekend in Dallas. The "Crue" played a sold out/climb the walls to get in venue last Saturday November 1st at Richard Rawlings' (he of Discovery Channel's Fast-n-Loud reality show), Gas Monkey Live concert club. It was billed as "Dodge Rocks Gas Monkey" sponsored by the car manufacturer-who is sponsoring the Crue's North American farewell tour through the end of the month. The worldwide tour ends in 2015

  • Most of you probably remember Jewel from the mid/late 90s - yeah, that’s Alaskan folk singer-songwriter and many of you probably even still are aware of her for some of her later music but what I didn't realize until this week was how utterly amazing she is in concert. Jewel is a true artist and that means you are going to see and hear things you weren't expecting such as yodeling, opera, and requests by the audience that were so obscure (even to her) that she had to flip through a book the size of an encyclopedia to get the lyrics.

  • In a market that is nearly saturated but at the same time working feverishly to expand its reach, the cruise lines are in a fight to find a way to fill their ships and bring in new cruisers. While other lines are building ever bigger boats with features unheard of at sea, Carnival decided to focus on entertainment and creating once-in-a-lifetime experiences that are surprisingly affordable. Earlier this month we had the opportunity to spend a week on the brand new Carnival Breeze and experience it for ourselves.

Unlike "themed cruises" the band isn't actually on the ship during the voyage, so that means that you can still have a "normal" cruise experience but on concert night things turn up a notch. On this cruise, we started in Miami followed by stops in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, Georgetown, Grand Cayman, and then during our stop at Cozumel, Mexico the band loaded their equipment on the ship and we stayed in port till about 1 a.m.

  • I am a huge fan of classic rock and have enjoyed a number of REO Speedwagon, Styx, Journey etc. concerts. These are always fun to attend but usually there isn't really anything new.

Earlier this week though, at the Del Mar / San Diego County Fair, REO Speedwagon's Kevin Cronin announces he has something special for us... a new song that they have been working on. Having understood that often times these are not really unique to us but more unique to the concert series I didn't pay much attention until he kept adding more detail and then ultimately (as you will see in the video below) he actually had the sheet music brought on stage.

  • header-thor-dark-worldMan Tripping writer Steve Kinnard attended a recent screening of Thor: Dark World as a guest of Disney and Marvel. All oppinions are his.

For those of you not aware, Thor: Dark World is the follow-up to 2001's Thor that introduced film-goers to the superhero / Norse god.

  • At one point or another, almost every guy has thought about "donating"... yes, that kind of donation :)

What happens though after that intimate moment in the lab, no one really thinks about - but the new Vince Vaugh movie Delivery Man takes that to the logical next steps, 533 of them!

  • ade-mcormackToday we were lucky to talk with actor, Ade M'Cormack about mancations and his favorite places to travel.

You may recognize Ade from a bunch of places including as "Yemi" on LOST, Blood Diamond, 24, The Unit, Heros, Without a Trace, and Gilmore Girls. He is now staring in Battle: Los Angeles coming out later this year.

  • will-sassoEver wonder what Will Sasso, star of Shit my Dad Says, thinks about mancations?

Well, wonder no more! Will Sasso tells us about his favorite spots including an undisclosed location near Big Bear, where he goes camping with a bowie knife and a case of clams.

Hiking, and going to Mexico to do things that would break the law in the United States also rank highly on his list.
