# The BagSmart Blast 43L Roller Backpack Is My New Go-To Weekender Bag

*By James Hills — Updated June 2026*

The BagSmart Blast 43L Roller Backpack replaced my duffle as my go-to weekender bag after a single trip. It's a 43-liter rolling backpack you can wheel behind you or strap to your back, and for a guy who spent years loyal to one duffle, that roll-or-carry flexibility turned out to be the whole point.

**How To Buy the BagSmart Blast 43L Roller Backpack****What a Roller Backpack Fixes That a Duffle Can't****Review Index**
The [BagSmart Blast 43L Roller Backpack](https://www.bagsmart.com/products/blast-roller-backpack?variant=42075644756050) is available direct from BagSmart at an MSRP of $139.99, with the weatherproofed Blast Pro version at $159.99.

A duffle is simple until you're loaded down with a hundred yards still to walk - here's where the Blast pulls ahead.

- The 43-liter main compartment swallows a weekend of clothes, shoes, and bulky gear like a BiPAP machine without making you play Tetris.

- You can roll it across a parking lot, then strap it to your back the second you hit stairs or gravel.

- External pockets keep chargers, cables, and a battery pack from vanishing into the main cavity.

- A lockable padded sleeve holds a laptop up to 15.6 inches, so it doubles as a work-trip bag.

- The standard Blast and the Blast Pro are the exact same 43-liter size, so the only real decision is how weatherproof you need it.

I grabbed mine for a long weekend at our condo, fully expecting to reach for my dependable Jansport duffle like always. Instead, I tested the Blast that Bagsmart had sent me, and after one trip, the duffel got benched. Here's what changed my mind.

My duffle is big, open, and fits everything, and I still love it for trips where I drop the bag once and forget about it. The problem shows up at the margins. After a three-hour drive with a bunch of other stuff already in my arms, the last thing I want is a fully loaded duffel hanging off one shoulder. With the Blast, I rolled it across the parking lot, and when I hit the stairs down to our unit I could pull out the stowable straps out and wore it on my back. Same bag, two modes, zero juggling.

I've reviewed a variety of different backpack-carryon hybrid bags over the years but this one felt the most complete and comfortable. Plus, with the bright orange wheels it was fun and functional! I dig that ...

## What Fit into 43 Liters? A BiPAP, Shoes, and a Weekend of Clothes!

The Blast holds 43 liters in one cavernous main compartment, and that number means more once you load it. For a long weekend I packed a couple changes of clothes, a second pair of shoes, and my BiPAP machine, and still had room to spare. The main space is the open box I wanted from a duffle, but it holds its shape and packs flat instead of slumping. Around the outside, a set of external pockets is where the bag pulls ahead of any duffle I've carried - chargers, cables, a battery pack, and a passport each get their own home instead of sinking to the bottom. There's a lockable padded sleeve that fits a laptop up to 15.6 inches, which is why it's become my work-trip bag too: when I fly out for a conference and can't check a bag, everything I need rides in one carry-on.

## Roll It, Wear It, or Carry It

The format flexibility is the real reason the Blast beat my duffle. The two-section telescoping handle extends to about 20 inches for rolling through airports and parking lots, and the wheels rolled smooth across the condo lot even loaded down. When the ground turns to gravel, stairs, or a curb the rollers can't handle, the padded shoulder straps stow flat when you don't need them and pull out in seconds when you do. An adjustable sternum strap takes the load off your shoulders once it's on your back, and grab handles on the top and side let you pull it out of a trunk or off a carousel like a normal bag.

Two honest trade-offs. At 6.61 pounds empty, the Blast starts heavier than a soft duffle of the same volume, and you feel the frame and wheels on your back on stairs more than on flat ground. And the stowable straps are built for short hops - parking lot to the front desk - not for hauling it a mile across a city the way a real backpacking harness would.

## Blast vs Blast Pro: Which 43L Roller to Buy

BagSmart sells two versions, and the difference is narrower than the names suggest. Both are the exact same size - 21.7 by 13.8 by 9.1 inches, 43 liters, barely a tenth of a pound apart on the scale. You're not buying a bigger bag with the Pro.

### The Standard Blast 43L ($139.99)

The base model wraps a ripstop nylon shell around a peach-skin lining, with a lockable laptop sleeve, an RFID-blocking pocket, stowable shoulder straps, and an adjustable sternum strap. At 6.61 pounds it's the lighter, softer-feeling of the two, and it covers what most weekend travelers need.

### The Blast Pro 43L ($159.99)

The extra $20 buys weather protection and durability, not space. The Pro swaps the nylon for a scratch-proof TPU exterior, adds a waterproof PVC lining and premium YKK waterproof zippers, and includes a detachable waist strap for heavier loads. BagSmart pitches the Pro for 7-to-14-day trips versus the standard's 1-to-2-week framing, but the dimensions are identical - the trip-length claim is positioning, not extra room.

Get the standard Blast if you stick to dry-weather weekends and want the same room for less, and step up to the Blast Pro if you travel in rain, haul it across dirty city sidewalks, or want a wipe-clean shell that shrugs off hard airport handling.

## This My First Time With A Bagsmart Bag - It Won't Be My Last

A season of long weekends, one road [trip with the guys](https://www.mantripping.com/guys-trip.html), and a few work trips later, the carry-on math is what keeps the Blast 43L in my rotation. At 21.7 inches tall it clears a standard domestic carry-on sizer, so I skip baggage claim and still fit my BiPAP, my laptop, and three days of clothes in one bag. The one thing to watch: at 9.1 inches deep plus the wheel housing, it's a tight push into the narrow overhead bins on regional jets, so on a small commuter plane plan to gate-check it - you skip the carousel either way.

Choosing between the two, I'd point most guys to the standard Blast and put the $20 toward the trip, unless you regularly travel in rain, where the Pro's TPU shell and YKK zippers are the upgrade to make.
