# Guns And The Great Outdoors: Protecting Yourself While Camping And Hiking

*By James Hills — Updated September 2026*

For most first solo camping trips, the practical answer is one gun or none. A firearm only belongs in the kit when you already know how to carry and use it safely, have a specific reason for bringing it and have confirmed that it is legal everywhere the trip will take you.

That reason matters because a defensive handgun, folding 9mm carbine and takedown .22 rifle do different jobs. Before comparing models or calibers, decide whether you are preparing for a dangerous person, wildlife, small-game hunting or recreational shooting.

Plenty of guys end up on a camping trip where someone else brought the firearm. Working out these rules in the group chat beats improvising around a fire at midnight.

- Ask before the trip whether anyone plans to bring a firearm, how it will be carried and where it will be secured when it is not on the owner's body.

- Nobody handles another person's gun without permission, and nobody should handle one unless they can do so safely and legally. A curious guest can ask for a range day instead of a campsite demonstration.

- Never leave a firearm loose in a shared tent, vehicle or campsite. When it is not being carried, secure it against unauthorized access in a locked container appropriate to the location and applicable law.

- Agree before the first beer that nobody will handle or carry a firearm after drinking or using anything that can impair judgment.

- Anyone uncomfortable around firearms should say so while the trip is still being planned. That is a reasonable boundary to raise with a group of friends.

The chance of needing a firearm at camp is low on most trips, but distance from help can make every emergency harder. Our guide to [keeping a remote campsite secure](https://www.mantripping.com/travel/proven-ways-to-keep-safe-while-overlanding-and-camping-in-remote-spots.html) covers the lighting, communications, food storage and campsite habits that come before any firearm decision. Most trips never need anything beyond those layers.

## Decide What Problem You Are Preparing For

"Protection" is too broad to guide a useful firearm choice. A solo camper worried about crime faces a different problem from a hunter pursuing squirrels or a backpacker crossing grizzly country.

### Protection From Other People

A firearm does not replace choosing a sensible campsite, keeping valuables out of sight, maintaining awareness or having a way to call for help. If a trained and lawful owner decides to carry a handgun, its primary advantage is that it can remain securely holstered and accessible while setting up camp, gathering firewood or moving around the site.

Do not walk into the darkness with a gun to investigate an unidentified noise. Illuminate the area from a safe position, identify what is happening, create distance when possible and leave or call for help if the situation feels wrong.

### Protection From Bears And Other Wildlife

Wildlife preparation starts with knowing which animals live in the area, storing food correctly and learning what to do during an encounter. In bear country, carry EPA-approved bear spray where you can reach it immediately, not buried in a backpack. The [National Park Service recommends bear spray](https://www.nps.gov/articles/bearsprayfirearms.htm) as the primary defensive tool during a bear encounter because it is easier to deploy and less likely to turn a charge into a wounded-animal emergency.

A firearm should not be treated as a replacement for bear spray, clean-camp practices or species-specific knowledge. Anyone considering a firearm specifically for dangerous wildlife needs training and advice appropriate to the animals and jurisdiction involved.

### Hunting Small Game

A takedown .22 LR makes sense when lawful small-game hunting is already part of the trip. That means having the required license, knowing the open season, confirming the legal method of take and identifying the animal before firing.

Pack every meal needed for the trip even when hunting is planned. Rabbit, squirrel or other legally harvested game can be part of the experience, but a first solo camper should not depend on finding and shooting dinner.

### Recreational Shooting

Bringing a gun for target shooting creates its own planning requirements. A campsite is not automatically a legal or safe shooting area, even on public land. Confirm local closures and shooting rules, use a safe natural backstop, follow fire restrictions and keep well away from roads, trails, buildings and other occupied areas.

## What A Handgun Does Well At Camp

A defensive handgun is useful primarily because it can stay with its owner. A rifle secured in a vehicle or leaning inside a tent cannot help when its owner is somewhere else, while a properly holstered handgun remains accessible without being handled around camp.

That portability comes with a tradeoff. A handgun is harder to shoot accurately than a shoulder-fired firearm, especially in poor light, under stress or on uneven ground. A shorter sight radius can make precise aiming harder with iron sights, although a red-dot sight changes that equation. Barrel length, ammunition, sights and shooter ability all affect practical performance, but none replaces training.

Solo carry also raises the standard for the holster. It should cover the trigger guard completely, retain the gun while climbing or crawling into a tent and remain secure when the backpack comes off. Retention and safe access matter far more on a trail than shaving a fraction of a second from the draw.

The firearm also needs a secure destination whenever it comes off the body. Swimming areas, showers, prohibited buildings and nights spent in a shared tent should be addressed before leaving home, not after arriving at camp.

## When A Folding 9mm Carbine Makes Sense

A pistol-caliber carbine such as the KelTec SUB2000 provides a stock, a longer barrel and a platform that many people can shoot accurately with less effort than a handgun. It folds for compact storage, and certain configurations can share magazines with a handgun the owner already uses.

That does not make it the automatic next step for every camper. A carbine is heavier, harder to keep on the body and subject to different transport or carry rules in some jurisdictions. For personal defense, greater distance often creates an opportunity to disengage rather than a reason to shoot.

The longer barrel can also increase velocity with many 9mm loads, but the result varies by ammunition. A load that functions and performs well from a handgun should not be assumed to behave identically from a sixteen-inch barrel. Start from a proven [9mm ammo for self-defense](https://www.ammunitiontogo.com/lodge/best-9mm-ammo-for-self-defense/) load rather than an unfamiliar one, then test it for reliability and point of impact in both firearms before the trip.

KelTec currently offers the SUB2000 in several configurations and magazine patterns, so check the exact generation and model rather than assuming it accepts a particular pistol magazine.

## When A Takedown .22 LR Makes Sense

A takedown .22 LR is a compact option for planned small-game hunting and lawful recreational shooting. Ammunition is light and relatively inexpensive, which makes the platform economical to practice with, but the rifle and ammunition still count against the weight available for water, food, shelter and emergency equipment.

Two models dominate this category:

- Henry U.S. Survival Rifle - The current H002 weighs 3.5 pounds, measures 35 inches assembled and stores its barrel, action and magazines inside a 16.5-inch stock. Its unusual design gives it the smallest self-contained package of the two.

- Ruger 10/22 Takedown with Magpul Backpacker stock - This configuration is heavier and slightly longer when packed, but it offers the familiar 10/22 action, broad parts support and considerably greater potential for customization.

The Henry wins on self-contained storage and minimum packed size. The Ruger is generally the better choice for someone prioritizing familiar controls, accessories and the ability to adapt the rifle over time. Check current specifications and prices with the manufacturer before buying rather than treating any published number as permanent.

## Small-Game Laws Change By Species And Location

A .22 LR is generally a small-game cartridge, not a legal deer cartridge. Hunting rules vary by state, species, season, property and sometimes the individual wildlife management area, so a nationwide caliber summary can become inaccurate quickly.

Check the current regulations published by the state wildlife agency for the exact place and animal involved. Permission to possess a rifle at camp does not create permission to hunt, and a hunting license does not make every firearm or ammunition type legal for every species.

The same distinction applies to grouse, rabbits and squirrels. A .22 rifle may be appropriate in one season or management unit while another requires a shotgun, limits ammunition or prohibits hunting entirely. If the trip crosses a state line, verify both states independently.

## Public-Land Rules Change Across A Single Trip

The name on the entrance sign matters. National parks, national forests, BLM land and state parks follow different combinations of federal, state and local rules.

### National Parks

Firearm possession in a national park generally follows the laws of the state where that part of the park is located. Qualifying federal facilities inside the park, including many visitor centers and ranger stations, remain subject to federal restrictions under [18 U.S.C. Section 930](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/930). Watch for posted notices and check the individual park's firearm page before arriving.

Permission to possess a firearm is separate from permission to discharge it. [36 CFR 2.4](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-36/chapter-I/part-2/section-2.4) generally prohibits firearm discharge in national parks except under specified circumstances or where other legal authority applies. Do not assume that a rifle legal to carry through the park is legal to fire there.

### National Forests And BLM Land

Target shooting is generally allowed in many national forests and on many BLM-managed lands, but local closures, developed recreation areas, fire restrictions and other rules still apply. Review the managing office's current guidance rather than relying only on a national summary.

The [U.S. Forest Service shooting guidance](https://www.fs.usda.gov/visit/know-before-you-go/shooting) and [BLM recreational-shooting guidance](https://www.blm.gov/programs/recreation/recreation-activities/recreational-shooting) are useful starting points, but the local forest, district or field office has the information that controls the trip.

### State Lines And Local Restrictions

A carry permit recognized at home may not be valid across a state line. State parks can have their own restrictions, and rules covering vehicle transport, loaded firearms, magazine capacity and storage can change during the same road trip.

Build a list of every state and land-management agency on the itinerary, then check each official source shortly before departure. Our guide to [what to know before bringing a gun on vacation](https://www.mantripping.com/stuff/what-you-need-to-know-if-you-bring-your-gun-on-vacation.html) covers transport and permit reciprocity in greater detail.

## Test The Complete Carry System Before The Trip

One handgun problem often appears only after the backpack is fully loaded. A padded hip belt can cover a strong-side holster, block the firing grip or force the gun into an unsafe position. The carry system has to work with the actual pack rather than only with jeans and a range belt.

A chest holster can solve that conflict by keeping the firearm above the hip belt. Rigs such as the GunfightersINC Kenai position the harness so most pack straps can clear it, but fit still depends on the backpack, body shape and clothing layers.

Put on the actual clothes and loaded pack before the trip and check whether the holster:

- Retains the unloaded firearm while walking, bending and climbing

- Allows the backpack to be removed without pulling on the gun or harness

- Provides access without pointing the muzzle at the body or sweeping other people

- Remains covered and protected from branches, dirt and weather

- Can be transferred to secure storage without unnecessary handling

Begin that fit test with an unloaded firearm after personally verifying its condition. Do live-fire drawing only at a range that permits holster work, preferably with a qualified instructor. Low-light practice must also take place somewhere that expressly allows it and provides a safe backstop.

## Most Solo Campers Do Not Need Three Guns

For most first solo trips, the decision comes back to one gun or none. A handgun may fit a trained owner's personal-protection plan because it can remain securely holstered and accessible. A folding 9mm carbine offers a steadier platform but adds weight and is difficult to keep with you around camp. A takedown .22 LR belongs on a trip built around lawful small-game hunting or target shooting, not as a substitute for packed food.

The right answer is the firearm you can carry safely, use competently, secure when it leaves your body and possess legally across the entire itinerary. If those pieces are not settled before departure, leave the gun at home and put the saved weight toward better communications, navigation and first-aid gear.
