Texas Travel Ideas

Texas

Everything is bigger in Texas and so it shouldn't be a surprise that there's a WHOLE LOT of stuff to do here. The important thing to remember when planning a Texas mancation is that every region is completely different and so just because you've "been to Dallas" doesn't mean you "know Texas". While most people think of visiting Texas and going to one of the big cities, don't miss out on hidden gems like the Gulf Coast beaches or the wide open spaces in West Texas where you can explore canyons, fish, and hunt.

  • Often times when it comes to planning a guys weekend you think in terms of "big cities" and forget about the fun in smaller regions of those metropolitan areas. These communities such as Irving, Texas can either be a destination itself... or a great basecamp making it easy to travel between hotspots in Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, and other areas around the "Metroplex". We joined a bunch of our blogger friends for an awesome trip to explore Las Colinas area in Irving, Texas and frankly I was surprised at how much fun stuff there was to do in what I initially thought was just a business park.

  • I generally don't get much stay in where I stay when traveling. Most of my travel arrangements are made by someone else and since they are paying I generally don't care as long as it's safe, clean and comfortable. That being said however, certain things make my stay that much better. A good desk space, a comfortable chair, plenty of USB and power outlets and good - easily accessible food options that aren't over priced. In the past, none of that would have described Marriott's core brand and absolutely nobody would have described it as stylish. For me personally, the Marriott brand wasn't "bad" it was just old and out of touch. Through pure luck though, this year I've had the chance to stay in several different Marriott locations at different parts of the country and it's clear that the brand is back in a good way!

  • Texas is known for being big and over the top, so I don't know why I was surprised to see a real live Texas Long Horn bull out front of The Ranch at Las Colinas when we arived. Not only was this cool to see, but it was there as a photo op for kids (of all ages!) to sit on as they took your photo. The bit of morbidity that you are quite literally playing with your food before dinner aside, this set the tone for one of the best steak dinners that I've had in a long while.

  • As the 4th largest city in the nation, Houston has something for everyone. You’re bound to find some great adventures in a city known for its chart topping comfort food, world-renowned rodeos, and rich history of space exploration. In addition to all these attractions, Houston sits right on the Gulf of Mexico, offering an array of activities from fishing to water sports and relaxing beach days. Spending the day in downtown Houston discovering the impressive architecture is an activity in itself.

  • We just got back from Austin, Texas and think you should plan a getaway there yourself as well! Luckily, Hotwire is here to help with their Hotwire XL Effect Sale where you can get 4-star hotels for only $49. Let’s take a look at how you can snag that deal and what you’ll find to explore in Austin once you get there!

  • A few weeks ago, our friends at Chevrolet invited us down to Texas to drive some trucks and eat BBQ. A day later, Verizon asked me if I wanted to check out the Pixel 2 on an upcoming trip. This was a match made in heaven, since even though Chevy always offers their built-in wifi, it's nice to have a great phone connection wherever you go too. Plus, the Pixel 2 XL has one of the best cameras out there so I was excited to check it out. Let's take a look at what we experienced.

  • Texas is a fabled land for those those that love freedom and the thrill of the open road. One of our friends, Mike from TheGentlemanRacer.com just came back from an incredible cross country road trip from Cleveland to Los Angeles. Along the way, he spent some time exploring Austin, Texas. Here's some of his favorite motorcycle trails in the area.

  • When it comes to planning your guys weekend or mancation, the hotel is almost as important as the destination. This is going to be your home base for a few days and it will generally set the tone for the rest of your adventure. While I'm of the thought that different groups of guys can pretty much make anywhere work, the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country is one of my favorites since it offers pretty much everything you'd need for the perfect escape with your friends.

  • Every place that I visit has a special food item that they are known for and while Texas is synonymous with BBQ I discovered a diverse world of awesome flavors last month as we explored San Antonio. From washing tamales down with an ice cold bottle of Big Red to candied pecan covered bowls of kettle corn, I simply wasn't expecting even half of what we enjoyed!

  • If you would like to spend some time away from the real world and hang out with your good guy friends, Austin, Texas is an ideal destination. There are plenty of fun and manly things to do in this Live Music Capital. There are plenty of ways for all of you to discover this city and what it has to offer to both its residents and tourists alike. The historic culture, delectable restaurants, and live music are all good enough reasons to come to Austin. However, there are even more fun-filled things that you and the guys can enjoy during your trip.

  • Sweets are only a part of the equation when it comes to entertaining during football season - the next essential ingredient is some hearty food that inspires your guests inner rivalries and After considering different foods across this country, "chili" was the one that stood out since no matter where you go - Texas, Cincinnati, Denver, Kansas City, Detroit, etc. Each city has it's own different interpretation of chili that they passionately hold to and will defend, just like they do their favorite football team!

So I was pretty excited when I was selected to prepare two of my favorite chili recipes as part of a homegating recipe with Alexia Fries and Onion Rings.

  • After a few years away, the Red Bull Air Raceis back and touring the globe! While we'll have to wait a bit longer for it to make it's way here to the United States, the race starts today at the Ascot Racecourse just outside London. If you are looking for a better excuse for a mancation or guys weekend, visiting one of the upcoming locations would be an awesome experience.

In September, the race comes over to the United States with a stop in Fort Worth on September 6 and 7. Then it arrives in Las Vegas on October 11 and 12 before wrapping things up in Spielberg, Austria.

For fans of auto-racing, this is taking things to the next level. Just imagine some of the most exceptional pilots in the world competing through a combination of high speed, low altitude, and extreme maneuverability tests as they compete for the honor of being the fastest around the course filled with inflatable pylons that form the "air gates".

  • Do you fly often? Sick of grabbing crappy overpriced airport food before jumping back on another flight? Yeah... me too! Airport lounges have evolved over the years from the old days when you got some complimentary orange juice and maybe a stale cinnamon roll.

A couple weeks ago I was privileged to be invited to visit the new The Centurion Lounge at the Dallas Fort Worth airport and what I found was pretty impressive.
