2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro Review

Sometimes the vehicles we love most are the ones that challenge our preconceptions. Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to test the all-new 2025 Toyota 4Runner at a special event in Michigan, and I'll admit it was bittersweet. The old 4Runner had been my trusted companion through countless adventures - from Joshua Tree's mining trails to following Mint 400 race tracks outside Vegas. It was old but comfortable, familiar like a well-worn pair of boots. Now that I've had a chance to spend time with the new one, I'm impressed. Let's take a look at what we love about the all new 2025 4Runner TRD Pro.

The new 6th-generation 4Runner represented everything we'd asked for: more power, better comfort, improved efficiency. Yet it wasn't what I knew. This review felt much like sipping wine - that first taste clears your palate so the second reveals the true character. After a week driving around Toledo and Southern Michigan, I discovered that character, and it's impressive.

The 6th-generation 4Runner addresses every major criticism of its predecessor while maintaining the fundamental character that made it legendary. Where the previous generation's 4.0-liter V6 felt strained and thirsty, the new i-FORCE MAX hybrid system delivers 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque with authority and efficiency.

During my testing, this transformation became immediately apparent. Highway on-ramp entrances now happen more quickly and high-speed passing happens with confidence instead of hope. This is in large part due to how the new hybrid system provides an immediate torque response, making the vehicle much more responsive as well. Additionally, this hybrid system improves on the EPA-estimated fuel economy of 23 city / 24 highway / 23 combined mpg means fewer fuel stops during weekend getaways - a significant improvement over the previous generation's thirsty appetite.

Perhaps more impressive is the dramatic improvement in highway comfort. Driving between Toledo, Ohio and our home in Saint Joseph, Michigan, I found myself genuinely comfortable at highway speeds and was able to easily maintain a phone conversation without shouting - something that wasn't always possible with the 5th generation 4Runner.

However, the new TRD Pro 4Runner also retained and improved on most of its already impressive off-road credentials, including now boasting 10.1 inches of ground clearance - substantially more than the 9.6" in the 2024 model. Additionally, with Toyota's Multi-Terrain Select system and Crawl Control 4Runner transforms technical driving situations from a test of skill into a seamless experience where you just need to select the right mode. I compare this to the "auto" modes on a DSLR camera where you can use it build confidence while you explore how the more technical features work as your confidence grows and off-road skills mature.

Five Things We Love About The 2025 4Runner TRD Pro

After spending quality time with the TRD Pro, several features stand out as genuine improvements that enhance both daily driving and adventure capability.

Advanced Technology That Actually Helps

The 14-inch touchscreen and 14-speaker JBL audio system represent a significant step forward from previous 4Runner interiors. The JBL system includes a portable JBL FLEX Bluetooth speaker that can be removed for use around camp or at the beach. The screen responds quickly and integrates wireless Apple CarPlay seamlessly - crucial for navigation during road trips to unfamiliar camping areas or trailheads. Standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 includes Traffic Jam Assist and Front Cross-Traffic Alert, which prove valuable in daily driving.

The Retractable Rear Window Returns

One of the most beloved 4Runner features makes a welcome return. The power rear liftgate window with auto up/down and jam protection provides practical ventilation during camping trips and easy access for loading gear without opening the entire tailgate. This simple feature speaks to Toyota's understanding of how people actually use these vehicles.

Interior Space Designed for Real Use

The TRD Pro offers seating for five passengers with 41.8 inches of front legroom and 34.8 inches of rear legroom. Cargo space measures 42.6 cubic feet behind the second row or 82.6 cubic feet with seats folded - note that hybrid trims, including the TRD Pro, do not offer an optional third row, which is only available on non-hybrid SR5 and Limited models. The heated and ventilated SofTex-trimmed seats proved comfortable during extended driving, with 8-way power adjustment and lumbar support.

Multi-Terrain Systems That Build Confidence

The standard Multi-Terrain Monitor provides selectable camera views that aid in technical off-road situations, while the Panoramic View Monitor with 360-degree overhead view assists with parking in tight spaces.

Heritage Design with Modern Reliability

The TRD Pro maintains the fundamental 4Runner character while adding refinement needed for modern ownership. Details like the steel front skid plate, transfer case protector, and high-strength underbody protection aren't cosmetic additions like you might see on some other competitors out there. Instead, they're functional components designed for real use that build long-term confidence.

Why Body-on-Frame Construction Still Matters for Serious Adventure Use

As someone currently cross-shopping vehicles that can handle both daily driving and weekend adventures, it's easy to forget that the 4Runner TRD Pro represents a fundamentally different breed of off-road vehicle. Many competitors are getting remarkably good at off-road performance, but the underlying engineering philosophy makes all the difference when you're miles from cell service.

The TRD Pro's impressive 10.1 inches of ground clearance combined with 33° approach, 24° departure, and 24° breakover angles demonstrate the advantage of purpose-built off-road geometry. Clearly these aren't the only reasons why 4Runner TRD Pro is a superior vehicle for men looking for adventure past where the pavement ends but I think it helps explain why 4Runner TRD Pro and its brother, Land Cruiser 1958 may be worth the premium price if this added capability is something that you need.

The table reveals why the 4Runner TRD Pro commands premium pricing - it offers superior ground clearance and approach angles that matter when navigating serious off-road terrain. While unibody alternatives provide lower entry prices and often more passenger capacity, their fundamental construction limits articulation and durability compared to the 4Runner's body-on-frame design with solid rear axle. Toyota's proven reliability and specialized off-road engineering justify the investment for buyers planning genuine adventure use rather than just rugged styling.

This fundamental difference becomes apparent when you need to repair trail damage or push through truly challenging terrain where unibody competitors reach their limits, making the 4Runner's engineering philosophy worth the premium for serious off-road use.

The 6th-Generation 4Runner TRD Pro Delivers

Starting at a significant premium over base 4Runner models, the TRD Pro justifies its price through a mix of off-road capability and practical luxury.

While I think my initial skepticism and emotional connection to its predecessor was healthy, one that I know was mirrored by other 4Runner enthusiasts, I really like this next-generation vehicle. Yes, it's different from the familiar 5th-generation. But like that second sip of wine that reveals hidden complexity, extended time with the 2025 TRD Pro reveals a vehicle that honors its heritage while addressing every legitimate criticism of its predecessor.

For those seeking an adventure-ready SUV that doesn't compromise daily comfort, the 2025 4Runner TRD Pro represents a compelling evolution. It maintains the fundamental character that made previous generations legendary while adding the refinement needed for modern ownership.
