Florida's Space Coast is the stretch of Brevard County most guys only pass through on the way to a cruise ship at Port Canaveral. Stay a long weekend instead and you get rocket launches, Kennedy Space Center, offshore fishing, Cocoa Beach surf and a craft beer trail, all about 45 minutes to an hour from Orlando International Airport. Base yourselves in Cocoa Beach, Titusville or Port Canaveral and the Atlantic stays warm enough to fish and surf well into the fall.
It's easy to dismiss Florida's Space Coast as just another cruise port. Even the cruise lines list it as "Orlando (Port Canaveral)," since Orlando is the airport you'll probably fly into. But long before the cruise industry exploded, this was a place full of rocket jockeys driving Corvettes, guys playing in the sand and surfing, and everyone looking to the sky wondering what might be out there. I think right now is an exciting time to go. For years the space center wasn't a big deal as the shuttle era faded, but with regular launches from SpaceX and others it's not unusual to see a rocket go up, and the museum and space center tours are as good as they've ever been. It makes a great father-son getaway, but a group of adult men can have a ball here too: surfing, fishing, golf, food, cars and rockets, then a cruise to the Caribbean or a beach house for the week. Too many guys only see this part of the country from the deck of a cruise ship while they shuttle the family between the port and Disney. Al Shepard, Gus Grissom and Gordon Cooper were among the ones who took him up on it. That's a good excuse to rent a sports car for the weekend and cruise A1A between Cocoa Beach and Port Canaveral. Guided kayak tours around Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, just north of Cocoa Beach, regularly find dolphins, manatees and wading birds. After dark, the same water lights up. Dinoflagellate bioluminescence runs from about May into early November, with the strongest glow from June through September, so an early-fall trip still has a shot. Flip the usual plan. Instead of flying into Orlando the morning of the cruise and heading straight to the ship, land two or three days early and spend them on the Space Coast: a launch from Jetty Park, a morning offshore, an afternoon in the Cocoa Beach surf. Jetty Park sits at the mouth of the port, so on a sailing day you can watch the ships head out the channel before it's your turn. And if the group isn't cruising at all, the same coast makes a warm fall getaway on its own.
