I've heard about Thunder Bay for several years, and it's always been a place I've wanted to visit. I finally got the opportunity during our Great Lakes cruise aboard Viking Octantis this summer. During this brief visit, we drove around town and the area impressed me. Thunder Bay, while relatively isolated, is far from a small town. It's got a surprising amount of great stuff that makes it both a fabulous cruise ship destination and perfect for any group planning a Canadian guys trip.

Viking Expeditions' Great Lakes cruises aboard Octantis and Polaris now regularly visit this incredible destination. For more information about planning your visit, check out Thunder Bay Tourism.
Conquer the Sleeping Giant's Epic Trail Network
The crown jewel of any Thunder Bay mancation centers around Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, located 75 kilometers east of the city. This 24,400-hectare wilderness playground offers everything from leisurely lakeside strolls to grueling backcountry expeditions perfect for a guys weekend.
Top of the Giant Trail Challenge
The Top of the Giant Trail represents the ultimate test for adventure-seeking groups. This 22-kilometer round-trip journey takes 6 to 10 hours, combining the Kabeyun Trail, Talus Lake Trail, and final ascent to spectacular lookouts. The trail passes through pristine wilderness and navigates around three secluded lakes before reaching dramatic cliffs offering panoramic views of Thunder Bay and Lake Superior's endless horizon.
For shorter adventures, the Sea Lion Trail provides a 2.4-kilometer round-trip hike to one of the park's most photographed geological features - a unique diabase rock arch formation jutting into Lake Superior.
Dive Into Thunder Bay's Thriving Craft Beer Scene
Thunder Bay's craft brewery explosion has created one of Northern Ontario's most impressive beer destinations. Five distinct breweries - Sleeping Giant Brewing Company, Dawson Trail Craft Brewery, Lakehead Beer Company, One Time Brew, and Prospector Brewhouse - offer everything from traditional lagers to experimental seasonal brews that capture Canadian wilderness essence.
Sleeping Giant Brewing Company anchors the scene with its cottage-themed taproom and flagship Northern Logger, recognized as the top pick in the 2017 Ontario Craft Beer Guide. The annual Brew Ha! Craft Beer Festival transforms Prince Arthur's Landing into Northern Ontario's largest beer celebration during the first weekend of July, making it perfect timing for Ontario guys trips.
Step Back in Time at Fort William Historical Park
I was especially excited by the chance to visit Fort William since it offered a completely different "fort" experience than United States, French, or Spanish forts where military power was the primary reason for existence. Instead, here's a great opportunity to learn about westward expansion and how First Nations peoples engaged with corporate explorers - a relationship that had massive impact on area development and international trade connections.
Fort William Historical Park recreates the 1816 fur trade era across 250 acres with over 40 historic buildings. Costumed interpreters portray historic characters demonstrating blacksmithing, canoe construction, and period cooking techniques. Anishinaabe interpreters provide authentic perspectives on Indigenous culture and complex relationships between European traders and First Nations peoples.
The park also houses the David Thompson Astronomical Observatory with a public 20-inch telescope - one of Central Canada's largest publicly accessible telescopes.
Unearth Hidden Treasures at Amethyst Mine Panorama
Just 60 kilometers east on Highway 11/17, Amethyst Mine Panorama offers a unique adventure combining geological education with hands-on treasure hunting. This family-owned operation provides guided and self-guided tours where your crew can dig for Ontario's official gemstone while learning about regional geological history.
Most groups spend 2 to 4 hours searching through carefully prepared material, finding everything from small amethyst chips to spectacular specimens featuring the deep purple, blue, and red varieties that make Thunder Bay amethyst world-famous.
Experience Thunder Bay's Arts and Culture Scene
Thunder Bay's cultural offerings continue expanding with the Thunder Bay Art Gallery's new waterfront location currently under construction and expected to open in 2025, adding another dimension to the city's growing arts scene. The Waterfront District already concentrates the city's best evening entertainment within walking distance, combining historic architecture with modern restaurants and live music venues.
Black Pirates Pub anchors the nightlife scene with pirate-themed atmosphere and live music programming, while Red Lion Smokehouse combines craft beer selections with elevated barbecue cuisine. The city's position as the largest venue between Winnipeg and Toronto makes it a crucial stop for touring musicians.

Adventure Beyond the City Limits
Thunder Bay's strategic location provides easy access to additional wilderness adventures perfect for extending any guys getaway.
Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park
Kakabeka Falls, known as the "Niagara of the North," plunges 40 meters over dramatic cliffs just 30 kilometers west of Thunder Bay. Ontario's second-highest waterfall features multiple viewing platforms and hiking trails, making it an excellent half-day adventure.
Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park
Ouimet Canyon presents one of Ontario's most dramatic geological features - a 150-meter-wide gorge with sheer cliffs dropping 100 meters to the canyon floor. Arctic-alpine plants that typically grow 1,000 kilometers further north thrive in the canyon's unique microclimate.
Master Lake Superior's Water Adventures
Thunder Bay's position on the world's largest freshwater lake opens endless possibilities for water-based adventures. Such A Nice Day Adventures offers guided sea kayaking expeditions, while local charter services provide excellent lake trout, salmon, and steelhead fishing opportunities.
Note that Lake Superior waters stay below 12°C (54°F) most of the summer, making proper gear essential for water activities.
Building Your Ultimate Thunder Bay Experience
Thunder Bay's combination of wilderness adventure, craft brewery culture, and authentic Canadian experiences creates unlimited possibilities for designing the perfect mancation. For anyone who thinks that Ontario, Canada guys trips are limited to the big cities like Toronto - think again. Destinations like Thunder Bay offer an amazing experience that deserves to be explored. While summer offers the best trail and kayaking conditions, fall foliage in Sleeping Giant and cooler nights make September - October another top time to visit.
Whether your group prioritizes outdoor challenges during a weekend with the guys, cultural experiences, or craft beer appreciation, Thunder Bay delivers authentic Northern Ontario adventures. The city's compact size and concentrated attractions make it possible to experience multiple activities during a single guys trip, while wilderness access points provide opportunities for extended backcountry adventures. From my brief cruise ship visit, I can confidently say Thunder Bay warrants a much longer stay - we're already planning our return trip to properly experience everything this remarkable destination offers.
