viking octantis expedition cruise exploring the great lakes

I used to think expedition cruises were only for hardcore adventurers in peak physical condition who didn't mind roughing it for weeks at sea. Then I boarded the Viking Octantis for a Great Lakes expedition cruise in June, and everything I thought I knew about expedition cruising got turned upside down. Even as a bigger guy who's not exactly at marathon-runner fitness levels, I discovered that modern expedition cruising has evolved into something far more accessible and luxurious than I ever imagined.

Now, before we begin I want to express that while Viking Octantis on the Great Lakes is not your typical expedition cruise experience - it is the absolute perfect introduction to this type of cruising. Specifically, it's closer to home (no long international flights), less concern about "what if I get hurt", and frankly it's a pretty cushy experience without any concern about dangerously cold water, snow covered hiking paths etc.  Most importantly for myself though, it opened my eyes to a new style of exploration. We will be doing a full review of our Viking Expedition Great Lakes Cruisee in the near future but for right now I want to share some of my observations from that two-week experience.

The Zodiac Boat Experience Changed My Perspective On Expedition Cruising

My biggest revelation came with my first ride on a Zodiac boat. I had memories of years ago riding in what felt like soft, squishy inflatable rafts that barely held my weight when standing. The reality on Viking Octantis couldn't have been more different. These weren't the flimsy boats I remembered - they were rigid-bottom vessels that could comfortably support my weight when standing and provided firm, supportive seating on the edges.

Expedition cruise technology has evolved dramatically, and even just the use of an inflatable motor boat has transformed from a rudimentary experience that was soft and unstable decades ago to the sophisticated RIB (rigid inflatable boats) I experienced on Viking Octantis during our Canadian waters segments. Most expedition ships now deploy these advanced vessels to get guests closer to the action - icebergs, coral reefs, private beaches, and even whales and other marine life, though activities vary by destination and local regulations. The Viking crew made boarding and disembarking surprisingly easy, even for someone of my size. These boats opened up experiences that would have been impossible from the main ship, and I realized that expedition cruising had become far more accessible than I'd ever imagined.

While my experience on Viking Octantis was exceptional, I recognize this was a pretty special vessel and that there are many different experiences you can have with expedition cruising. Each ship brings unique capabilities, crew expertise, and expedition equipment to the table. However, for me - I'm hooked! I can't wait to take another expedition cruise sometime soon.

Physical Fitness Requirements, More Flexible Than Expected

The biggest myth about expedition cruises is that you need to be in peak physical condition. While some expedition experiences do require higher fitness levels (and especially the ability to safely wear life jackets and expedition jackets in Arctic and Antarctic regions), many modern luxury expedition lines accommodate guests with varying abilities - including those who pack some extra weight, like myself. During my time on Viking Octantis, I observed passengers using scooters and walkers enjoying incredible onboard experiences. However, it's essential to note that most expedition lines require guests to board and disembark via the gangway unassisted, which can limit some shore excursions for those with mobility devices.

However, the crew was always extremely accommodating on the tenders and other auxiliary vessels used to explore the area.

The key is understanding that expedition cruising offers multiple ways to experience each destination. While some guests kayaked or took challenging hikes, others enjoyed submarine rides, specialized boat tours, or simply observed wildlife from the ship's observation decks. For group trips where friends have mixed fitness levels, this flexibility means everyone can have an amazing time without anyone feeling left out of the adventure.

Insurance and Expert Planning Are Critical

This is where most guys trip planning goes wrong - expedition cruises aren't like booking a typical Caribbean cruise. The costs are significantly higher, and many standard cruise insurance policies don't cover the unique activities and remote destinations involved in expedition travel. Many polar operators require emergency medical evacuation coverage of $100,000-$500,000, and some lines include basic evacuation benefits but still recommend comprehensive coverage. We used Berkshire Hathaway for our coverage, but the real game-changer was working with someone who specializes in expedition cruising.

My wife Heather from Flow Voyages has become our go-to travel advisor for exactly this reason. She understands the nuances of different expedition cruise lines, can help identify the right ship and destination for your group's interests and abilities, and most importantly, she knows which insurance policies actually cover everything from kayaking excursions to medical evacuations from remote locations. Beyond insurance, she provides packing tips and insider knowledge that can make the difference between a good expedition and an extraordinary one.

Expedition Ships Can Go Places That Traditional Cruises Can't

My parents learned this lesson the hard way. Last year, they took a traditional cruise to Greenland, but missed the destination entirely due to unfavorable ice conditions. This year, they attempted again on a different ship, but only managed to make two of the three planned stops, as the vessel had to stay farther from shore due to ice and fog. Meanwhile, guests on expedition ships like Viking Octantis were using specialized equipment - PC6 ice-class hulls, Special Operations Boats, advanced Zodiac boats, submarines, and The Hangar launch platform - to get much closer to glaciers and ice formations, though specific equipment availability varies by itinerary.

This isn't just about bragging rights (though those are significant). Expedition ships are specifically designed to access places that traditional cruise ships cannot reach. The vessel design, specialized equipment, and expert crews create opportunities for wildlife viewing and destination access that justify the premium pricing, while following strict IAATO and AECO guidelines that mandate minimum approach distances for wildlife protection. Some guests have booked two or three different cruises to Greenland before successfully setting foot on shore - expedition ships dramatically improve your odds of actually experiencing the destinations you're paying to visit.

Expect an Active, Learning-Intensive Pace

Forget everything you know about typical cruise pacing. Traditional ocean cruises focus on relaxation - you might have three or four ports in seven days, with plenty of time for poolside lounging and spa treatments. Expedition cruises operate on an entirely different schedule. During our Viking Octantis Great Lakes adventure, we were doing something almost every day: Zodiac expeditions, kayaking, swimming in the lakes, attending lectures, and participating in science demonstrations.

It was absolutely exhausting, but also incredible. We didn't just visit the Great Lakes - we gained a deep understanding and appreciation for this ecosystem that went far beyond anything we'd learned in over a decade of living right on Lake Michigan. The combination of active exploration and educational programming creates an immersive experience that changes how you see the world, but you need to be prepared for a much more intensive pace than a typical guys weekend cruise.

fantastic food and wine

Food and Comfort Standards Exceed Expectations

I had visions of eating MREs and camp food, but expedition cruise dining consistently impressed me. Cruise lines understand that guests love to eat, especially when they're being physically active all day. Even on more rustic expedition ships and converted Russian icebreakers, the food tends to be surprisingly good.

Destinations Now Span the Globe Beyond Polar Regions

Just a few years ago, expedition cruising seemed limited to Antarctica and the Arctic Circle. While these remain the bread and butter of the industry - with operators chasing summer seasons at both ends of the globe to avoid the worst ice conditions - the concept has expanded dramatically. Modern expedition cruises now explore the Amazon, coastal Africa, the Sea of Cortez, Hawaii, and even Caribbean destinations. This expansion means guys planning Great Lakes guys trips or warm-water adventures have expedition options they might never have considered.

Seasonal Strategy Matters More Than Traditional Cruises

Unlike traditional cruises that operate year-round in most destinations, expedition cruising follows much more specific seasonal windows. Ice conditions, wildlife migrations, and weather patterns create narrow optimal windows for many destinations. Antarctica operates November through March, Arctic regions like Svalbard run late spring through early fall, Greenland is primarily a summer destination, and Great Lakes expeditions typically operate late spring through early fall. Planning your expedition cruise requires more strategic thinking about timing than a typical vacation, but the payoff is experiencing destinations at their absolute peak conditions.

Expedition Cruise Lines Worth Considering

The expedition cruise industry offers incredible diversity in experiences, ship sizes, and service levels. While my Viking Expeditions experience was exceptional, it's important to understand that each cruise line brings unique strengths and focuses to expedition travel. Working with an experienced travel advisor who understands these differences is crucial for finding the right fit for your group's interests, budget, and travel style.

Viking Expeditions - Luxury expedition ships like Octantis offering premium accommodations with submarines, Special Operations Boats, Zodiacs, and The Hangar platform, sailing globally from polar regions to warm-water destinations. The only amenity they are missing is that they have no helicopters, but I'm ok with that since they tend to be very loud and disruptive.

Silversea Expeditions - Ultra-luxury expedition fleet including Silver Endeavour and Silver Origin, providing butler service and gourmet dining in remote destinations worldwide.

Lindblad Expeditions/National Geographic - Partnership combining expedition expertise with National Geographic education, specializing in Galapagos, Alaska, and polar regions with expert naturalist guides.

Celebrity Cruises - Celebrity Flora offers luxury expedition cruising in the Galapagos islands with all-suite accommodations and upscale dining in the world's premier wildlife destination.

HX Hurtigruten Expeditions - Independent expedition cruise specialists operating hybrid-powered ships including Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen to Antarctica, Arctic, Galapagos, and Norway's coast with sustainable practices.

Hurtigruten - Norway's original coastal cruise line since 1893, operating the classic Bergen-Kirkenes route with 34 ports connecting fjords, towns, and communities along Norway's dramatic coastline as well as their Signature Voyages including seasonal Northern Lights cruises.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours - All-inclusive luxury expedition ships featuring spacious suites, multiple dining venues, and helicopter/submarine programs in polar and remote destinations (availability weather-dependent).

UnCruise Adventures - Small-ship expedition cruising focused on active adventures in Alaska, Hawaii, and Central America with intimate group sizes and adventure-focused itineraries.

Seabourn Venture/Pursuit - Ultra-luxury expedition ships with ocean-front suites, world-class dining, and U-Boat Worx submarine programs exploring remote destinations with sophisticated amenities (submarine availability weather/permit dependent).

Aurora Expeditions - Australian-based expedition operator specializing in small-ship adventures to Antarctica, Arctic, and remote Pacific destinations with expert expedition teams.

Quark Expeditions - Polar expedition specialists operating ice-strengthened ships to Antarctica and Arctic with adventure activities like helicopter tours on select ships such as Ultramarine.

Poseidon Expeditions - Cyprus-based international expedition operator using ice-class vessels for Arctic and Antarctic expeditions (North Pole voyages currently suspended due to geopolitical conditions).

Expedition Cruising Offers Bucket-List Experiences To Adventure Seekers

The evolution of expedition cruising from hardcore adventure travel to accessible luxury has created opportunities for experiences that, for many of us, were previously considered impossible just a few years ago. Modern expedition ships prove that you don't need to choose between comfort and adventure - you can have both while accessing some of the planet's most extraordinary destinations. The combination of advanced technology, expert planning, and luxury amenities means that even bigger guys like me can chase icebergs in Antarctica or swim with sea lions in the Galapagos without sacrificing the comfort and service we've come to expect from premium travel experiences.
