Couple arriving at their hotel suite for a romantic getaway

Planning a spicy romantic getaway starts with choosing the right level of privacy, adventure, and intimacy for your relationship. That might mean a private pool suite, themed hotel, Red Room rental, or adults-only resort, depending on what sounds fun to both of you. The best spicy weekend getaway is one that gives you space to explore together without pushing either of you past what actually feels comfortable.

We have written about this before from the other direction. If you want the catalog of properties, our roundup of themed fantasy suites runs from Viking longships to a room with a stripper pole. This is the planning half: how to figure out which one of those you should be booking, and how to bring it up first.

If you grew up anywhere near Chicago, you know the ads. They ran constantly, they were never quite explicit, and everybody in the car understood exactly what was being sold. For a lot of guys my age the name arrived secondhand, in stories told by people a generation older.

The first Sybaris opened in Downers Grove in December of 1974. Five clubs run today across the Chicago suburbs, Mequon outside Milwaukee, and Indianapolis. Heather and I have been. That is as much as I am going to say about it.

The reaction is where most couples stop. The name comes up, everybody laughs, somebody makes a joke about mirrors on the ceiling, and then they go book the same quiet country inn they booked last year. The laugh is part of the appeal, not a reason to skip it.

That is probably the useful dividing line for everything that follows. These places work when the room itself is part of the joke, the fantasy, and the plan. If you are hoping the suite disappears into the background while you go out for dinner and sightseeing, you are shopping for a different kind of weekend.

What Belamere And Sybaris Offer That A Hotel or B&B Can't

Belamere Suites and Sybaris are set up so you never have to open the door at all, which is the opposite of what a nice hotel is designed to do. The amenity list gives it away.

Belamere is in Perrysburg, Ohio, a suburb of Toledo and about an hour south of Detroit. Every suite comes with an attached one-car garage, so you park and walk in without crossing a lobby, and three of the four suite tiers include a private swimming pool inside the room, heated to 94 degrees.

The rest is a fireplace, a two-person whirlpool, a walk-in granite shower for two, and a catered breakfast delivered to the suite in the morning. None of it requires you to be seen by another human being.

Sybaris takes the same approach with different hardware: private pools, whirlpools, fireplaces, and on the top tier a two-level chalet with a waterfall and a slide. The tell across both properties is what is missing. No restaurant you need a shirt for. No lobby bar. No front desk conversation about brunch reservations.

Both are adults-only, and both land in the $200 to $350 range depending on tier and night. Sybaris will not sell a suite to three people under any circumstances.

Four Levels Of Spicy Couples Getaways: Purpose-Built Clubs, Themed Suites, Red Room Rentals and All-Inclusive Resorts

Everything in this category sorts into three groups, and they are not interchangeable. The clubs and the private rentals sit at either end on price, on privacy, and on how much can go wrong.

The Purpose-Built Club

Sybaris and Belamere are what most guys picture here. The building exists for one reason, the staff have seen everything, and nobody is going to raise an eyebrow at your reservation. The upside is zero friction and zero explaining. The tradeoff is that the aesthetic is what it is - these are not design hotels, and if the decor is going to pull her out of the mood, this is the wrong pick.

The Poconos got there first. Morris Wilkins dropped a heart-shaped tub into a room at Cove Haven in 1963 and followed it with a seven-foot champagne glass whirlpool in 1984, which is how northeast Pennsylvania became the honeymoon capital of the world. Cove Haven and its sister property Paradise Stream still rent suites built on that idea, though Pocono Palace closed in 2024. For anyone on the East Coast, that corner of Pennsylvania does what the Chicago suburbs do for the Midwest.

The Themed Fantasy Suite

This is the Madonna Inn end of the spectrum, and it is the softest landing of the three. A themed room hands you a costume to hide behind, which for many couples is the on-ramp they need. It also survives being talked about at dinner with friends, because you can tell people you slept in a room shaped like a covered wagon.

The Private "Red Room" Rental

You have seen these listings if you have spent any time scrolling vacation rentals - the house with a locked room that the host describes in careful language that alludes to the "50 Shades of Grey" fantasy with words like "Red Room" in the vacation home or cabin rental name where photo set includes "furniture" that is not furniture. The privacy here is complete and everyone knows what's going on here.

For curious couples you usually find places like this on your standard vacation rental sites and frankly it's amusing that I find these more often in places like Tennessee, Ohio or Indiana than more "liberal" states like California or New York where you'd generally assume to find a more sex-positive population. Make of that what you will ... frankly it makes a great reason to visit Southeast Ohio or Chattanooga, Tennessee for a spicy weekend getaway with your wife :)

All-Inclusive Resorts For Adults Only

The final category here is the "Adults Only" all-inclusive resort that goes beyond the normal food, golf, and sand. Places like Temptation in Cancun are topless-optional and take singles as well as couples. Desire is couples-only and clothing-optional. Hedonism II in Negril has been at this since 1976 and is the oldest of the three.

Going into more detail about these all-inclusive resorts for couples looking to push their relationships to a new level is beyond the scope of this article but they do offer a way to be social in a way a private suite is never meant to be. Going from vanilla to that type of spicy getaway in a single vacation is a big leap for a first-timer, but the freedom to walk around topless at the pool or go swimming in the nude with a splash (or much much more) of voyeurism can definitely add spice to your relationship if that's what you are looking for!

Matching The Intensity Of The Getaway Is Critical To Your Keeping Your Relationship Strong

Choosing the suite is the easy half. It is what you carry through the door that stops couples, because they assume there is a standard to meet.

For plenty of couples the entire spicy fun upgrade is a bottle of edible lube, a sexy pair of boxer briefs or maybe a new toy to play with in private without kids knocking on the door or asking what that noise is..

For others the "personal care" hardware from a company like Hismith is where they want to explore and so a private pool suite or a red room rental a few hours from home is exactly where it would get tested out for the first time. Neither couple is doing this wrong, it's all about building trust in your relationship.

There is a boundary worth recognizing between bringing something more adventurous into a private weekend and choosing a resort where sexuality becomes part of the social environment. Those are very different decisions. A couple can be completely comfortable with the first and have no interest at all in the second.

The smaller version of that mistake is booking above your line. If you reserve the chalet with the slide and the mirrored ceiling as a statement about the kind of couple you are trying to become, you will spend the weekend performing instead of relaxing, and you will both feel it by Saturday afternoon. If the gym-drawer briefs are your speed, book the room that matches.

Talk With Your Wife Before You Book A Pool Suite For Your Romantic Getaway

If you've never tried something like this, float the idea before you commit any money. Send her the property page, say it looks ridiculous but sorta fun and ask if she wants to try it some time. That framing gives her room to laugh, room to say yes and room to say not this one without it becoming a rejection of you.

The surprise still has a place, just not in the idea itself. Once the answer is a real yes, surprise her with the date and the drive, not with the fact that the room has its own pool. That is the difference between a weekend she tells her friends about and one she endures politely.

Think about how much effort goes the other direction. Guys will spend three weeks on a Nashville guys trip, negotiating tee times and dinner reservations in a group chat, and then book the anniversary weekend from a phone in a parking lot. For the tamer version of the same effort, we broke down how to plan a romantic getaway she will enjoy.

Once you have the yes, the trip becomes surprisingly ordinary to plan. The romantic question is mostly settled. Now you are dealing with food, timing, what to bring, and one unusual constraint: the whole point is to avoid creating reasons to leave the room.

Packing And Logistics For Planning A Weekend In A Room You May Never Step Out Of

The practical side of these properties trips people up because the usual travel instincts do not apply. You are packing for one room that you have no intention of leaving.

Food is the first thing people get wrong. Breakfast may come with the suite, but lunch and dinner will not, and if the property has no restaurant and you have no intention of putting real clothes on, you need a plan before you arrive - a cooler, a grocery stop on the way, and a delivery app that covers the address. Check that last one before you leave, because these places are on suburban commercial strips where coverage runs thin.

Bring your own music and something to drink, since there is no bar on site and the in-room selection is usually an afterthought. Pack lighter than you think on clothes and heavier on everything else. If you are bringing anything for the occasion, whether that is a bag from the shop or something you picked out while shopping for lingerie, put it in your bag rather than hers.

Then buy the late checkout. Belamere charges $25 for it, and for a room you are not planning to leave, it is the best money on the bill.

Spicy Weekend Getaways Are A Great Way To Explore Your Relationship Together But You Gotta Do It Smart

The point is not to book the wildest room you can find or turn an anniversary into some kind of test. It is to give yourselves a little privacy, a different setting, and permission to try something outside the routine.

For one couple that might mean a private pool and a bottle of wine. For another it might mean packing a few things they have talked about trying at home. What matters is that you are both excited about the same weekend before you get there.

That is why the smart version starts with the conversation, not the reservation. Pick the room together, stay inside whatever boundaries feel right, and leave yourself enough room to laugh if some part of it turns out to be ridiculous.

You do not need a mirrored ceiling or a champagne-glass whirlpool to prove anything. You just need a weekend that feels like yours.
