Bristol sits at the center of a day-trip radius that takes in Roman baths, a limestone gorge, two medieval castles, Somerset cider country and the last Concorde ever to fly. The city core is walkable. Almost everything worth driving to is inside an hour. For a group weekend in South West England, nothing else in the country packs that much into one drive time.

Planning a boys trip to Bristol city is the easy part but this is truly an awesome gateway to all of the sites in Southwest England as well as Wales. The reason to base a whole weekend here is the ring of Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Welsh border country sitting inside a short drive.

South West England is the official name for the region - Bristol, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. The people who live there call it the West Country, and the word carries the associations you want: cider, cheese, farmland and the accent every pirate movie has been imitating for seventy years. Bristol is the largest city in it, and the only one with an international airport, a mainline rail station and enough hotel rooms to keep fifteen guys under one roof. That makes it the practical front door to the region and a serious addition to any UK guys trip shortlist.
Getting Around The West Country
This is the part that decides whether the weekend works. Bristol Airport is eight miles south of the city on the A38 and has no railway station, a gap debated for decades and never closed. The Airport Flyer bus runs into Temple Meads and the coach station from about £9 and takes half an hour in light traffic, which is fine for two people and awkward for fifteen with luggage.
After enough group trips, you learn the thing that kills a weekend is never the itinerary. It is the transport. The cider farm, the gorge and the castles all sit 20 to 45 minutes outside the center, none of them on a useful rail line, and the whole point of a Somerset cider tasting is that nobody should be driving afterward. Car rental means one guy stays sober and the group splits across three vehicles. Taxis mean the same split at a worse price. The value of the place is the radius around it. Bath is 13 miles east. Cheddar Gorge is 19 miles south. Chepstow, across the Severn in Wales, is 18. Cheltenham is under an hour north. A group can stay in one hotel all weekend and still cross into another country before lunch.
Cheddar Is A Real Village, 19 Miles South
The cheese took its name from the caves in the gorge above the village, where the wheels were originally aged. The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company is the only producer still making cheddar in Cheddar, and since 2006 it has matured part of that cheese in Gough's Cave at around twelve months. You can watch the morning make, then taste the cave-matured version against the standard one and decide whether the cave is doing anything.
Back in the city, St Nicholas Market is the food stop worth building a lunch around. It runs Monday to Saturday inside a Georgian exchange building, and the stalls skew toward what a hungry group wants: Portuguese custard tarts, Caribbean plates, falafel, and the pies that turned Pieminister into a national brand. Bath, 13 miles east, covers the more formal dinner if one night of the weekend calls for it.
Myrtle Farm Cider, Then The East Bristol Brewery Trail
Somerset is cider country the way Kentucky is bourbon country, and Thatchers has been making it at Myrtle Farm in Sandford for over 120 years. The farm runs a two-hour tour through the mill that finishes in a tasting, and it takes groups of up to 30. Thatchers stopped running public tours on Saturdays at the start of 2026, because mill upgrades mean it no longer presses and packages at weekends. Tours now run Tuesday to Friday, so the cider leg has to sit on a weekday.
Bristol's own beer sits mostly on the east side of the city. Wiper and True has a taproom in Old Market with a beer garden and weekend brewery tours. Left Handed Giant runs a brewery and taproom in St Philips plus a brewpub closer to the harbour. Bristol Beer Factory covers Bedminster. The trail strings several of them together, and it is the one leg of the weekend a group can walk without a plan.
Concorde Alpha Foxtrot Sits In A Hangar At Filton
Aerospace Bristol is worth giving up a morning for. The aircraft was the last of the fleet to be built, in 1978, and the last to fly, on 26 November 2003, when it went from Heathrow to Filton with 100 British Airways staff aboard. It logged 18,257 flight hours and went supersonic 5,639 times. You board it, and the cabin is narrower than the photographs suggest, with two seats either side of a single aisle.
The SS Great Britain sits back in the harbour in the dry dock where Brunel built her, with the deck and the engine room open to walk. For groups who would rather drive something than look at it, Castle Combe Circuit is about 20 miles east in Wiltshire and runs track days and passenger sessions most of the year.
450 Feet Of Limestone At Cheddar Gorge
The gorge cuts through the Mendip Hills about 35 minutes south of the city, with a clifftop circuit that loops the rim and Gough's Cave running back into the hill. Guided caving runs from beginner scrambles to wet crawls, and the hills above are riddled with systems that local outfits work.
Closer in, the Avon Gorge under the Clifton Suspension Bridge has climbing routes on real rock inside the city, with guided sessions for groups who have never tied in before. Ashton Court has mountain bike trails on the estate five minutes from Ashton Gate. Wookey Hole, near Wells, is the softer version - show caves rather than a helmet-and-headlamp afternoon.
Berkeley Castle, Where Edward II Was Murdered
Berkeley has been held by the same family for nearly 900 years, and Edward II was imprisoned there from April to September 1327 and killed in a small room off the main entrance. Thornbury Castle, 13 miles north of the city and fifteen minutes short of Berkeley, is a Tudor pile where Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn stayed and which now runs as a hotel, so a group can book rooms instead of tickets.
The tour will tell you about the red-hot poker. Historians have largely discredited that version, and a handful argue he never died there at all, which makes for a better conversation than the standard castle walkaround. Check the calendar first: Berkeley opens Sunday to Wednesday only, from late March to the start of November, and shuts Thursday through Saturday for private events. Ten miles from Thornbury, Chepstow Castle sits over the Severn in Wales with Tintern Abbey up the Wye Valley behind it.
King Street, Thekla And The Harbourside
The default is a short crawl along the water. King Street packs several bars into one stretch, including the Beer Emporium and Small Bar, and Thekla is a nightclub in a cargo ship moored in the docks. Stokes Croft is the scruffier, later end of town. All of it sits inside that fifteen-minute walking radius.
Bristol has been a stag party town for a long time and the operators here run karting, axe throwing, clay shooting and rage buggies as routine business. Alcotraz, a prison-themed cocktail bar where you smuggle your own spirits past a guard in character, works far better with eight guys than with two. If a bachelor party is the reason for the trip, Bristol belongs on the same list as the usual stag do destinations in Europe.
Arrive On A Wednesday
The move most groups miss is landing midweek instead of Friday night. Thatchers runs tours Tuesday to Friday after dropping Saturdays at the start of 2026, and Berkeley Castle opens Sunday to Wednesday and shuts Thursday through Saturday. Wednesday is the only arrival day that leaves both still reachable: the castle on Wednesday, the cider farm on Thursday, the city on Friday and Saturday. Midweek room rates in Bristol run lower than Friday ones too.
Line up the coach for the Wednesday and Thursday legs, keep Friday and Saturday on foot around the harbour, and the whole thing runs on one hotel bill and one driver.
