They carry heavier vertical loads, run higher pressures, and use stiffer sidewalls specifically to resist the lateral flex that turns into [trailer sway](https://www.mantripping.com/stuff/how-to-prevent-trailer-sway.html). What they lack is the tread pattern and softer compound built for steering and braking on a powered axle, because a trailer tire never steers and never puts power down. This is why raiding the truck-tire rack is a bad instinct. An LT (light truck) tire can be rated for the load and still give you a softer sidewall than the ST tire it replaced, which is the exact property that resists sway. Matching the load number alone does not make the swap equivalent. Some builders do factory-fit LT tires and there are setups where it is the right call, but check with the trailer maker before you go that direction, not after. The wheels are their own system too. A trailer wheel carries its own load rating, and that rating has to at least match the tire you mount on it, because a wheel can be the weak link under a tire that was rated correctly. Truck wheels and trailer wheels are not interchangeable parts. ## Step 1 - Know Your Load Rating Every trailer wears a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating on its ID tag. Divide that number by the tires on the ground and you have a conservative minimum capacity for each tire. Strictly speaking the axles carry a little less than that, because the tongue weight rides on your truck's hitch rather than on the trailer's tires, so sizing off the full GVWR builds in margin. Take the margin. Capacity changes with tire size and it is stamped on the sidewall in plain pounds, so read the tire in front of you and compare that number against what your trailer needs. ## Step 2 - Bias-Ply Or Radial? The internal construction decides how a tire handles heat and how well it survives rough ground. - **Bias-ply** stacks criss-crossed cords from bead to bead, creating a stiff sidewall that resists cuts on rutted job-site roads and rocky tracks. It costs less up front and suits equipment that only moves on weekends. Most bias-ply is capped at 65 mph. - **Radial** wraps steel belts around the crown and runs cords straight across the tread. The carcass flexes, heat dissipates, and the ride stays smoother across long highway stints. Radials generally last longer in constant motion and cost a little less in fuel. Interstate miles or a mountain grade, radial. ## Step 3 - Choose The Right Rim Material The wheel comes down to steel or aluminum, and what the trailer gets exposed to usually settles it. - **Steel wheels** shrug off potholes and curb strikes and cost less to replace. They carry extra weight, though that rarely bothers a pickup with torque to spare, and a modern powder coat or e-coat fights winter salt. - **Aluminum wheels** cut unsprung mass and hold up far better than bare steel against salt water, which is why they are the default at a coastal boat ramp. They cost more, and road salt will still pit an unprotected alloy over time, so a clear coat matters in a winter climate. ## Step 4 - Match Gear To Terrain And Travel Style | Terrain / Usage | Preferred Tire | Preferred Rim | | --- | --- | --- | | Rough construction sites | Bias-ply | Steel | | Long highway hauls | Radial | Aluminum or Steel | | Wet coastal regions | Radial | Aluminum | | Utility and dump trailers | Bias-ply | Steel | | Snow and salted winter roads | Radial | Coated Steel | Judgment still applies. A coated aluminum wheel serves snowy roads fine, and a radial with extra sidewall protection handles the occasional gravel spur. ## How To Read The Date Code On Your Trailer Tires Find the DOT code on the sidewall, usually near the rim and often on only one side of the tire. The last four digits are the build date: the first two are the week, the last two are the year. A tire stamped 4224 was built in the 42nd week of 2024. The date matters more on a trailer than on your truck, because trailers sit. A truck tire wears out and gets replaced on tread. A trailer tire spends most of its life parked in the sun with the weight of the trailer pressing on one patch of sidewall, oxidizing and cracking while the tread stays deep. Guidance on when to pull them ranges from about five years to ten, depending on who you ask and how the trailer is stored, but the principle does not move: trailer tires fail on age, and plenty of them let go with most of their tread still on. Check the date code on the spare too. A ten-year-old spare will not save you. ## The Trailer-Day Checklist Before the coupler drops onto the ball: - Inflate every tire to its rated cold pressure and scan the sidewalls for cracks or bulges. - Torque the lug nuts to the trailer or wheel maker's spec with a calibrated wrench, and re-torque any newly mounted wheel, steel or aluminum, after the first 50 to 100 miles. - Carry a matching spare, a jack that fits the trailer, and a breaker bar. - Check the TPMS batteries, or pack a gauge you trust. - Inspect every tire once it passes five years, and do not run a trailer tire past ten, however deep the tread looks. ## Safe Tires and Rims Are Your Foundation for Proper Hauling! Trailer tires rarely wear out. They age, they overheat, and then the tread separates, or the sidewall blows, usually at speed and usually in summer. Every one of those failures traces back to a decision made in a parking lot: the wrong load range, a pressure nobody checked cold, or a build date nobody read. So buy for the load and replace for the calendar. And if the trailer lives outside, throw covers over the tires or park it on boards rather than on hot asphalt.
