A Rich History Rooted in Southern Hospitality
The origins of RT Lodge trace back to 1932, originally built as a private estate for the widow of Andrew Carnegie's business associate John Walker. Over the decades, the estate transformed into a public inn, and then into the exclusive and intimate lodge that guests love today. In 1997 it was leased by Ruby Tusday to serve as their private retreat and training facility but was ultimately bought outright in 2021 and turned into to lodge we stayed in last week.
Just walking through the property was an amazing experience, one steeped in a rich history that adds to its charm and allure, making it not just a place to stay but a part of your adventure.
Throughout its history, the lodge has maintained its commitment to offering a warm, inviting atmosphere paired with genuine Southern hospitality. Its evolution from a private home to a beloved retreat is reflected in every corner of the lodge, from the cozy fireplaces to the antique furnishings, hunting dog artwork, and plush leather couches that decorate its rooms.
A Picturesque Setting In the Smoky Mountain Foothills
RT Lodge is situated on several acres of beautifully landscaped grounds within the College Woods of Maryville College. The setting is postcard-worthy, with the natural backdrop providing a tranquil environment that feels both exclusive and secluded. The lodge itself blends beautifully with its surroundings, featuring rustic architecture that echoes the natural beauty of the Smoky Mountains.
To further enhance this experience are multiple fire pits, plenty of outdoor patio space to enjoy a relaxing drink, or a relaxing stroll through the tree-lined pathways.
Accommodations and Amenities
The lodge offers a range of accommodations from cozy rooms in the main lodge to private cabins scattered throughout the grounds. Each room is uniquely decorated, featuring elements like exposed wood beams, warm quilts, and surrounding forest views. The atmosphere is one of comfort and relaxation, with each space designed to feel like a home away from home.
One disappointment was that pricing and overall atmosphere does not match the experience in the rooms themselves. While there is a wonderful atmosphere that continues the Great Smoky Mountains lodge experience, for a property asking $300-$400+ per night, the bathrooms facilities and lack of elevators was a disappointment. Guests who have mobility issues where they are unable to climb stairs with luggage (and those who simply don't want to) need to confirm at time of reservation that they have a first floor room available.
To be fair though, this is a historic lodge and different buildings were built at different times so while our experience at the Wiley House fell short in that regard, guests who stay in Walker House may have a different experience.
On the other hand, we do appreciate that there are dog friendly rooms that come complete with bed and bowls for man's best friend. Not all rooms are designated as "Dog Friendly" so you must select this option while making your reservation or contact the reservation agent to confirm specific availability.
RT Lodge amenities continue outside as well. The very well-maintained grounds include walking trails, a picturesque lake, and plenty of outdoor spaces to relax and reconnect with nature. Bikes are available and so are rocking chairs by the fire. For the more adventurous, the proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers endless opportunities for hiking, fishing, and exploring the rich biodiversity of the region.
