While the movie was released in theaters just a few weeks ago, Onward by Disney Pixar is now available on Movies Anywhere and April 3 in the US on Disney+. A little Indiana Jones, a little road trip movie, a little coming of age movie, and a lot of Dungeons and Dragons, Onward is the tale of two brothers on an epic quest to reconnect with their father who died when they were very young. It isn’t Pixar’s most original effort yet, but it’s fun, thoughtful, and full of adventure, and its ending is heartwarming. 

A frenetic, grandiose and mostly exciting effort that is about as good as anyone could reasonably hope for.  But given the fact that it has no interesting characters, no worldbuilding, no coherent overarching plot, and the previous installments gave it no setup to work with, that’s not saying much.

As any parent can sing for you, Disney’s 2013 smash hit Frozen cemented Elsa, Anna, Olaf and Kristoff solidly in their canon of central characters, and Idina Menzel’s Grammy and Oscar-winning “Let it Go” written by Kristen and Robert Lopez in every parent’s musical rotation. With nearly 1.3 billion dollars at the box office, the sequel was inevitable, and here it is. But will it hold up to the original?

Sure, you could go see the Joker or any number of other scary movies that are in theatres this time of year, but with the world as crazy as it is today there is something nice and refreshing about a movie like The Addams Family and it's even better when you can kick back, relax, and enjoy it with more than just popcorn at your side. That's why I love visiting Theatre Box here in San Diego.

Months ago when I first saw the Aladdin trailer I was immediately skeptical that this would be a movie worth spending time writing about - much less watching. There are simply too many remakes of excellent films that are more knockoffs than truly designed to bring new life into classic material. Despite that, I gladly accepted an invite to be one of the first to see a preview of the film. I had three wishes for this movie and I'm thrilled to share that Genie (and cast / crew) granted them all! 

Captain Marvel is a good film for kids, with positive messages for them about not giving up, and plenty of action to keep them entertained.  For adults? It’s fun, and it’s not awful. But it’s not especially good, either. Captain Marvel hits and misses with the comedy, and doesn’t have much meat to its story, so it really just ends up as a passable actioner that sorta coasts on inertia.  

Channeling the spirit of Die Hard with some video game era grandeur, Skyscraper won’t be the cultural icon its predecessor was, but it’s a heck of a lot of fun for its hour and fifty minute run time.

Star Wars returns with a shallow but fun romp featuring some of its most iconic characters. It probably won’t stay with you for very long, but you’ll enjoy it while you watch it.

If you don't know that Deadpool 2 is coming to theaters this week then you probably don't care and can stop reading our review right now. For the rest of you, don't worry - we attended a preview last week and LOVED the movie. I'm not going to spoil it for you, but here's a few reasons why you need to see it too.

In what Marvel Studios likely expected to be this year’s biggest film before the box-office dominance of February’s Black Panther, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) teams up two directors with about two dozen superheroes in an intergalactic battle against Thanos, the giant purple genocidal maniac bent on collecting the six Infinity Stones which will allow him to control reality and unleash is evil plan upon the universe.  And the only people standing in his way are Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket the Raccoon, Scarlet Witch, Black Panther, Black Widow, Purple Horseshoe, Doctor Strange- you know what, let’s just say “a lot of characters,” and one of those was a cereal marshmallow anyway.

This review is simple - Blockers is one of the funniest movies in a LONG TIME. Go see it! OK, so you want more? Here you go...

Another year, another Star Wars.  This time, we have The Last Jedi, Episode VIII of the Star Wars series, at least the sequential series.  While there isn’t a lot that is very original going on here, and it retreads The Empire StrikesBack in much of the same way The ForceAwakens did with the original film and parts of Return of theJedi, it does so far more competently and coherently than Episode VII did, and it’s a fun and engaging movie, visually stunning at times.  While John Williams’ score that might not rank at the top of the series’ offerings, it is at the very least par for the course.  And, to be fair, how much more can you really do with the Star Wars score at this point, and how much is even needed?

 Rogue One is the Star Wars movie fans have been waiting for since 1983. Simply put: Rogue One delivers!

If you were like us here at ManTripping, last year's The Force Awakens was a fun, but fairly bland and forgettable nostalgia piece that was too dependent on fan service and too hindered by its safe script that was riddled with contrivances and poor dialog, as well as a protagonist without any real character arc. Rogue One, on the other hand, will prove that all they needed to do to rekindle the Star Wars spirit in fans was to actually make a good movie.

As stoic in demeanor and violent in action as ever, Matt Damon returns to the titular role in Jason Bourne after a nine year hiatus and a temporary series handoff to Jeremy Renner in 2012's The Bourne Legacy. And everything is just how you remember it.

Some movies are works of cinematic genius designed to be studied by film students and others are simply meant to be enjoyed. The Huntsman: Winter's War falls into that latter category and enjoy it I did. I didn't see the first movie - Snow White and the Huntsman, so I can't compare it to this one. However, if you loved Frozen but thought it would be cool to have a live action version with child soldiers, some slapstick humor, flaming goblin guts, romantic hot tub scenes, and two sisters that well... didn't exactly get along... then this is your film.

To be completely fair, all movies are a product of their times. What made Star Wars great in the beginning, was its ability to meld groundbreaking special effects with compelling narrative drawing from timeless story lines. For the prequels they were a product of an industry drunk on CGI but immature to the point of not really understanding when to use computer graphics and when it would simply look better to have real props. The movie I watched yesterday morning is similarly a product of its time. That's not completely a bad thing but it did leave an awkward taste in my mouth despite it being generally a fun movie to watch.

The Ant-Man franchise comes on the heels of the ridiculously successful Avengers: Age of Ultron and last year's Guardians of the Galaxy. While an original member of the team in the comic series, this was perhaps seen as a riskier franchise than Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, or Captain America, the far more recognizable members of Marvel’s premier superhero group. Previous efforts to bring Ant-Man to the screen suffered a variety of pre-production setbacks, never quite reaching the screen. But now Ant-Man is here, and Marvel seems intent on grabbing audiences’ love for snarky, roguish heroes. Whether or not this is really faithful to the Ant-Man franchise, you’d have to ask a comic book reader far better versed with the character than I, but it works for this movie, for the most part. Ant-Man combines a superhero movie with a heist movie, adds in a legion of arthropod sidekicks, and entrusts the comedic talents of Paul Rudd to steer the thing, which he does admirably.

The Internet has been abuzz with talk of this week's big movie opening, the latest release from the Marvel Studios. This, of course, is the second installment in the Avengers franchise, sequel to the third highest grossing film of all time, and we got a chance to see it earlier this week. Will it live up to the hype?
