Winterize your boat after the last run of the season and before the first hard freeze, which on southern Lake Michigan usually means October for boats in Chicago, Kenosha and Southwest Michigan, since the Chicago Park District harbors close for the season on October 31. Wait for a cold snap to force the job and you are gambling with the engine block, the water heater and every water line on board.
A boat that skipped a winterization or two can look fine at the dock and still be hiding a cracked part. Check these before you hand over a deposit. As October cools things down along Lake Michigan, a lot of owners start searching for "boat winterization near me" and find out how much a modern boat holds that needs protecting. Engines and generators are the obvious ones, but ice makers, air conditioners, washdown pumps, hot water tanks, and the fresh, grey, and black water systems all carry water that can freeze and split something over a Great Lakes winter. I lived in San Diego for a decade and there really is no winter layup there. Boats stay in the water all year long, and while maintenance is an issue obviously, regular seasonal maintenance on marine engines running in salt water, like freshwater flushes, zinc anodes, and keeping growth off the bottom, is a different issue than preparing for ice and snow. Freezing temperatures mean a lot different level of preparation for boat owners. Now I am back on the Great Lakes in St. Joseph, Michigan (just across the lake from Chicago), where the season is short and every boat must be prepared for the winter. It is remarkable how involved and how important that process is, and first-time boaters may not know what's actually involved in protecting their investment from being damaged if it's done improperly. I am shopping and talking with other boat owners but every time I drive past the marina ... the same debate plays out in my head ... should I buy something designed for the offshore chop to allow me to fish on Lake Michigan or a pontoon for the St. Joseph River that may also work ok on calm days on the lake. Regardless of which ends up being Heather and I's choice ... winterization is an inevitable and unavoidable part of that discussion, both the bill and the responsibility. Sometimes I think it might just be easier to get a boating membership instead of actual ownership but that's for another article. Boat winterization means draining every system on board or filling it with antifreeze, stabilizing the fuel, protecting the engine internals and storing the boat so ice and moisture cannot do damage before spring. When water freezes, it expands by about 9 percent, which is enough to split an engine block, an exhaust manifold, a lower unit gearcase, or a water heater tank. Why we picked it: a grill you can actually carry to the campsite, the tailgate or the cabin without borrowing a truck. Stainless, no propane tank to wrestle, and hot enough to cook for four guys rather than reheat for one. Promoted by FlowAds The exact steps are set by the manufacturer and differ between an outboard, a sterndrive and an inboard, so the owner's manual is the starting point. If you hire a shop, ask which procedure they follow and make sure it matches the manufacturer's recommendations, rather than trusting them blindly. Winterization is also the annual reset. With the boat out of the water and the engine getting fresh oil, it is the easiest time of year to spot a worn impeller, a weeping hose or a soft spot in the deck before it costs you a weekend next July. The trigger for winterizing on Lake Michigan is the overnight low, not the first snow. Chicago's average first measurable snowfall doesn't arrive until around November 18, according to National Weather Service records, and a hard freeze inland can come before one at the lakefront, where the lake's stored summer warmth tends to keep the shoreline milder into fall. The marina calendar sets the rest. The Chicago Park District runs its 10 harbors from May 1 through October 31, so most Chicago boats come out in October whatever the weather is doing. Southport Marina in Kenosha, Wisconsin, offers both inside heated storage and outside storage, and Southwest Michigan sits in the same weather window about 90 minutes around the lake from Chicago. A common rule of thumb is to book the haul-out once nighttime lows regularly dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, leaving a buffer before the first freeze. Better yet, book the date in September. The last warm Saturday in October is tempting, especially if it is your one shot at a weekend fishing with the guys, but a boat still in the water when a hard freeze hits can turn that trip into a cracked engine block. Every manufacturer has its own checklist, but a proper Lake Michigan winterization covers the same ground in roughly this order. Use propylene glycol, the nontoxic pink antifreeze, not automotive ethylene glycol, which is toxic and has no place in a potable water system. The mistake that catches a lot of owners is skipping winterization because the boat is going indoors. Unless the building is heated, it gets as cold inside as out, and an unheated barn or storage building in Southwest Michigan in January can freeze an engine block just as surely as an open yard. BoatUS also advises against leaving a space heater running in a stored boat, since it fails during a winter-storm power outage, exactly when you would need it, and it is a fire risk. Boatzon's 2026 roundup of posted dealer rates from Indiana, Wisconsin and Maine shops puts basic winterization at roughly $180 to $700 for an outboard and $400 to $800 for a sterndrive or inboard. Shrink wrap typically runs $16 to $30 per foot in cold-weather states, so roughly $340 to $630 for a 21-foot bowrider, and an oil change adds $150 to $250. Outdoor storage starts around $20 per foot, and heated indoor storage for the season can approach $3,000. For most family boats, the same roundup suggests budgeting $800 to $1,500 a year for service and shrink wrap, plus storage. That is the part of boating I never had to think about in San Diego. Before you buy a new or used boat for Lake Michigan, count the layup as a yearly cost of ownership, along with the hours someone has to put in every fall. Choosing the right boat for your lifestyle, or the best boat for your family if the kids are coming along, changes the fall bill too. The same roundup reports a 22-foot pontoon winterized for just under $750, while a 23-foot wake boat with ballast tanks, a heater and indoor storage runs $1,700 to $3,080 all in. Every tank, heater and extra onboard system adds to the October invoice, so if you are weighing a pontoon or a bowrider for Lake Michigan, put the winterization quote for each side by side. If you will only get out a handful of weekends a summer, run the numbers on chartering instead. A salmon charter out of Milwaukee on a Great Lakes guys trip, or a day on the water during a Michigan guys trip, leaves the haul-out and the shrink wrap to someone else. Some guys split ownership with a buddy or a couple of work colleagues, which splits the winterization cost too, as long as everyone agrees up front who handles the haul-out. Winterization is half of the job. The other half is spring commissioning: flushing the antifreeze out of the freshwater system, reinstalling and charging the battery, checking the impeller and hoses, and getting the boat back in the water. Book that launch date when you sign the storage contract in the fall, because the Chicago harbors open on May 1 and every owner on the lake wants the same first weekends. My take as someone shopping for a Lake Michigan boat: get a written quote for the haul-out, winterization, shrink wrap, storage and spring launch before you make an offer on the boat itself, and add that number to the purchase price. What Do You Call Your "Guys Trips"?
