Guys Trips In Michigan

frozen drinks on mackinac island

Michigan is my other home. My wife went to U of M, we've been coming here for 20 years, and we live in St. Joseph on the southwest coast. Most people — even plenty of Detroiters — reduce this state to one city. That's a mistake. Michigan sits on four of the five Great Lakes, has 3,288 miles of freshwater coastline (second only to Alaska in total U.S. shoreline), and the Upper Peninsula is practically a different country. From Detroit-style pizza and coney dogs to wine trails and some of the best fishing in America, Michigan delivers for every kind of guys trip.

Where to Go in Michigan

Michigan's guys trip geography splits into four zones — the Detroit metro for sports and food, the Traverse City wine-and-ski corridor, the southwest Lake Michigan coast, and the Upper Peninsula wilderness. Each is a completely different trip.

Detroit

The Detroit sports scene covers you — Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings all within walking distance downtown. But the real draw is the food. Buddy's invented Detroit-style pizza in 1946, and the original location near Hamtramck still turns out those crispy-edged rectangles. Cross into Hamtramck for Polish kielbasa at Srodek's. Lafayette and American Coney Island have feuded side-by-side on West Lafayette Boulevard since 1917 — pick a side. The Henry Ford Museum gives you a full day of automotive history that's impressive even if you're not a car guy. Detroit has the nightlife density and casino scene for a bachelor party weekend — Greektown and the Corktown bar strip handle the evenings.

Traverse City and Northern Michigan

The Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail runs 10 wineries along a narrow strip between East and West Grand Traverse Bay — Brys Estate, Chateau Chantal, and Mari Vineyards are standouts. Winter brings skiing at Boyne Mountain (415 acres) and Crystal Mountain (59 runs, about 30 miles southwest of Traverse City). Sleeping Bear Dunes is a must — the dune climb overlooking Lake Michigan is one of those experiences photos don't capture. The National Cherry Festival hits in July.

Northern Michigan

Northern Michigan stretches from Petoskey and Harbor Springs east to Gaylord and Grayling. The Au Sable River is legendary for fly fishing — a father-son float trip on the Au Sable is one of those Michigan traditions that works whether your kid is 15 or 45. The Pigeon River Country State Forest has elk viewing east of the Rockies, and Boyne Highlands adds another ski option.

Southwest Michigan

I'm biased because I live here, but Southwest Michigan is genuinely underrated for a guys getaway. The Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail connects 15 wineries from New Buffalo north through St. Joseph, Benton Harbor, and Saugatuck — Tabor Hill, St. Julian, and Round Barn are the heavy hitters. The beaches rival anything on the East Coast, and it's only 90 minutes from Chicago, making it an easy weekend escape. Silver Beach in St. Joseph is a great home base, and the craft brewery scene in Kalamazoo (Bell's Brewery) and South Haven keeps growing.

What Michigan Does Best

Michigan runs on water, food, and seasons — three things that make it one of the most versatile guys trip states in the country.

Great Lakes Fishing

Charter boats out of Manistee, Ludington, Frankfort, and St. Joseph target king salmon, coho, steelhead, and lake trout from May through October. Inland, the Au Sable and Pere Marquette rivers are bucket-list fly fishing destinations. If your crew fishes, Michigan should be at the top of the list.

Food That Goes Deeper Than You Think

Beyond Detroit-style pizza and coneys, Michigan has olive burgers (a West Michigan tradition since the 1920s — try Kewpee in Lansing or Halo Burger in Flint), pasties in the UP from Cornish mining traditions, Polish food across metro Detroit, and a sausage culture from local meat markets that's seriously underrated.

Winter Without Flying West

Boyne, Crystal Mountain, and Nub's Nob deliver solid Midwest skiing. The UP has over 3,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails rated among the best in America. Cross-country skiing on the Vasa Trail near Traverse City rounds it out. Michigan handles winter guys trips without the airfare to Colorado.

When to Go

Summer from June through August is prime — beaches, fishing charters, and wine trails all running at full capacity. Fall color peaks in Northern Michigan and the UP during the first two weeks of October and is worth building a trip around. Winter means skiing and snowmobiling from December through March. Steelhead runs start in March, trout opener hits in late April. One tip: Lake Michigan water temps are brutal until June — don't plan a beach trip before Memorial Day.

More Michigan Guys Trip Ideas

Michigan has enough depth across its two peninsulas to fill return trips across every season.

  • Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore — Kayak painted sandstone cliffs on Lake Superior near Munising.
  • Mackinac Island — No cars allowed, Fort Mackinac, fudge everywhere. Better for a guys trip than it sounds.
  • Bell's Brewery in Kalamazoo — Home of Two Hearted Ale, one of America's most decorated craft beers.
  • Michigan International Speedway — NASCAR in Brooklyn, MI, with camping and tailgating culture.
  • Isle Royale National Park — Remote Lake Superior island, ferry access only. Zero cell service.
  • Tahquamenon Falls and UP Waterfalls — The second-largest falls east of the Mississippi anchors 300+ waterfalls in the UP.
  • Grand Rapids Beer City — Founders Brewing leads 80+ breweries in a metro consistently ranked among America's best.
  • Torch Lake — Caribbean-clear water with sandbar parties in summer.

Other States Worth Exploring

Michigan connects to the Great Lakes guys trip corridor in every direction. These are the natural next trips.

  • Ohio — if the Great Lakes fishing on Michigan's coast has your crew hooked, Ohio's Lake Erie charter scene out of Toledo and Cleveland puts you on walleye runs that rival anything on the western shore.
  • Indiana — the wine trail through Southwest Michigan pairs naturally with a run across the state line into Indiana, where Brown County's distillery scene and mountain biking pick up where the vineyards leave off.
  • Wisconsin — Michigan's Upper Peninsula shares more DNA with Northern Wisconsin than it does with Detroit. The north woods fishing and supper club culture around Minocqua is the same vibe, just across the border.
  • Minnesota — if Traverse City's wine country surprised your crew, Minnesota's craft brewery density in Minneapolis and the Boundary Waters paddle-in fishing offer the same Great Lakes spirit with a wilder edge.

These are the official tourism sites for some of our favorite Michigan destinations:

Michigan rewards the guys who look past the obvious. Detroit is worth the trip on its own — the food, the sports, the history. But the state opens up once you head north. Traverse City for wine and skiing. The UP for backcountry fishing and snowmobiling. Southwest Michigan for beaches and wineries 90 minutes from Chicago. I've been coming here for two decades and I keep finding new reasons to stay. Your crew will too.
