Guys Trips In California

California is the state I know best because I was born here, grew up in the Bay Area, and lived in San Diego for a decade. It's my favorite state, and I'm not even trying to be objective about it. Most people think they understand California, but they're usually picturing one version of it — the beaches, or Hollywood, or Napa. The reality is that this state has more geographic and cultural diversity packed into its borders than most countries. If you're planning a guys trip, California will give you more options than you can fit into a long weekend, and that's the whole point.
What Do You Call Your "Guys Trips"?
California rewards guys who do a little homework before booking. These are the things that separate a great trip from a frustrating one.
- The state is massive — San Diego to the Oregon border is over 800 miles. Don't plan a trip that tries to hit LA, San Francisco, and Yosemite in one long weekend. Pick a region and go deep.
- Coastal fog is real, especially in San Francisco from June through August. Pack layers even in summer — Karl the Fog is not a joke. Head inland 30 minutes and it's 85 degrees.
- Wine tasting is NOT just Napa and Sonoma. Paso Robles on the Central Coast, the Gold Country foothills near Placerville, Temecula outside San Diego, and Santa Barbara's Funk Zone all deliver without the Napa crowds or prices.
- Yosemite and popular national parks require reservations during peak season. Half Dome permits sell out months ahead — plan early or go in October when the crowds thin and the weather is still perfect.
- Cruise ports are booming — San Diego, Long Beach, San Pedro, and San Francisco all run regular sailings to Baja, the Mexican Riviera, Alaska, Hawaii, and California Coastal itineraries. Build a guys trip around embarkation day.
Where to Go in California
California's guys trip geography covers four distinct zones — the Southern California coast, the Bay Area and NorCal, the Central Coast wine corridor, and the Sierra Nevada mountains. Each one is a completely different trip, and they're all world-class.
Los Angeles
LA is the entertainment capital, and it delivers for groups who want nightlife, sports, and food in one city. The Los Angeles guys trip scene covers everything from courtside at a Lakers game to a bachelor party weekend in Hollywood that nobody needs to post about. Dodger Stadium, SoFi Stadium for NFL doubleheaders, and the bar density in West Hollywood and Downtown LA mean your crew never runs out of options. The food alone — Korean BBQ in Koreatown, street tacos from vendors that have been working the same corner for 30 years, ramen in Little Tokyo — makes it worth the trip.
San Diego
I lived in San Diego for 10 years, and it's the most underrated big city in America for a guys trip. The San Diego craft beer and outdoor scene is elite — over 150 breweries, Petco Park consistently rated one of the best ballparks in MLB, and Torrey Pines golf sitting on oceanside cliffs. The Gaslamp Quarter has the nightlife density for a proper weekend, and the fish tacos are non-negotiable. The cruise port runs regular sailings to Baja and the Mexican Riviera, so a father-son trip combining a few days in San Diego with a short cruise is one of the best combos in the state.
San Francisco
The Bay Area is where I grew up, and San Francisco still hits differently. It's compact, walkable, and the food scene per square mile might be the best in the country. Chase Center for Warriors games, the craft cocktail bars in the Mission, and the cruise terminal at Pier 27 running Alaska and Hawaii sailings all make it a legitimate launch point. Cross the Golden Gate to Marin for hiking, or head east to Livermore Valley wine country for tastings without the Napa price tag.
Gold Country
This is the sleeper guys trip that most people don't know about. The Placerville and El Dorado County foothills east of Sacramento are Gold Rush territory — historic towns, excellent wineries like Boeger and Lava Cap, and whitewater rafting on the South Fork of the American River. It's the kind of weekend where you're tasting Zinfandel in the morning, rafting class III rapids in the afternoon, and eating at a restaurant built inside an 1850s saloon by dinner. History, wine, and adrenaline in one trip.
What California Does Best
California dominates in categories that matter for guys trips — and a few that surprise people. Here's where the state earns its reputation beyond the obvious.
Wine Country (All of It)
This is my biggest pet peeve: people say "California Wine Country" like it's one place. It's not. Napa and Sonoma get the fame, but Paso Robles on the Central Coast has over 200 wineries with a fraction of the crowds. Santa Barbara's wine scene was put on the map by Sideways, and the Santa Ynez Valley delivers Pinot Noir and Syrah that compete with anything in Napa. Temecula south of LA, the Sierra Foothills near Placerville, and Livermore Valley east of San Francisco all have their own character. The entire state, from San Diego to the Oregon border, grows grapes and makes excellent wine. Plan a wine trip around whichever region your crew is closest to — you won't be disappointed.
Cruising
California's cruise port network is growing fast. San Diego, Long Beach, San Pedro, and San Francisco all serve as embarkation points for Baja, Mexican Riviera, California Coastal, Alaska, and Hawaii itineraries. Princess, Carnival, Holland America, Celebrity, Viking, and Disney all run regular sailings. San Francisco's Alaska cruises are longer than Seattle departures — 10 to 14 days — but the extra sea days and the city itself make it worth the time.
Fresh Food and Ethnic Diversity
The farm-to-table movement started here for a reason — California grows more food than any other state, and the creative energy of the people who cook it is unmatched. LA's ethnic food scene covers every cuisine on the planet. San Diego's fish tacos are a religion. San Francisco's dim sum in the Richmond District is the real deal. The Central Valley's roadside fruit stands in summer sell peaches and tomatoes that ruin you for grocery store produce forever.
Outdoor Adventure
Yosemite, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Sequoia, Redwood — California has nine national parks, more than any other state. Surfing in Huntington Beach, mountain biking in Downieville, skiing at Mammoth Mountain, rock climbing in Joshua Tree, and deep-sea fishing out of San Diego all happen within the same state. If you aren't a wine guy and your crew wants to get after it outdoors, California's got something you'll dig.
When to Go
California is genuinely year-round, but timing matters by region. Spring and fall are the sweet spots for most of the state — comfortable temperatures, thinner crowds, and lower hotel rates. Summer is peak season along the coast and in the mountains, with Yosemite and the national parks at capacity and beach towns buzzing. The Outside Lands music festival in San Francisco draws massive crowds in August, and the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach takes over late July. Fall brings harvest season in every wine region, with crush events and barrel tastings from Napa to Paso Robles through October. Winter is ski season at Mammoth and Tahoe, and Southern California stays warm enough for golf, hiking, and outdoor dining straight through December and January. The Rose Bowl in Pasadena kicks off the new year, and whale watching season along the coast runs December through April.
More California Guys Trip Ideas
Beyond the headliners, California has enough depth to fill a lifetime of return trips. These are the experiences worth adding to the itinerary.
- Pacific Coast Highway road trip — rent convertibles in San Francisco and drive Highway 1 south through Big Sur, Monterey, and Santa Barbara. One of the great American road trips.
- Lake Tahoe adventure weekend — skiing at Heavenly in winter, mountain biking at Northstar in summer, plus Stateline casinos for poker and sports betting after dark.
- Mammoth Mountain ski trip — one of the longest ski seasons in the country, often running into June, with an Eastern Sierra backcountry vibe that feels nothing like the resort towns.
- Joshua Tree camping — rock climbing by day, stargazing at night, and a desert silence that resets everything. The nearest craft brewery scene in Palm Springs is 45 minutes away.
- Pebble Beach golf — play one of the most famous courses in the world with the Pacific Ocean crashing below every tee box. Book well ahead and bring your wallet.
- Off-roading at Oceano Dunes — ATV and 4x4 access on California's most expansive coastal dune system near Pismo Beach.
- Taco crawl in LA — street tacos at legendary spots like Leo's Taco Truck, birria from Teddy's Red Tacos, and a full Koreatown BBQ detour.
- Deep-sea fishing out of San Diego — yellowtail, bluefin tuna, and dorado charters run year-round from Point Loma sportfishing landings.
Other States Worth Exploring
California connects naturally to the wider West Coast and Mountain West guys trip corridor. These are the states your crew should look at next.
- Oregon — if the wine tasting and craft beer culture grabbed your crew, Oregon's Willamette Valley Pinot Noir and Portland's brewery density take that same energy north with smaller crowds and lower prices.
- Washington State — Seattle is the other major Alaska cruise embarkation port, and the hiking, biking, and craft beer scene in the Pacific Northwest delivers the same outdoor-meets-urban balance as the Bay Area.
- Nevada — Lake Tahoe already straddles the border, and Vegas is the bachelor party capital of America for a reason. Desert off-roading, world-class golf, and a nightlife scene that needs no introduction.
- Arizona — the Valley of the Sun delivers spring training baseball, championship golf, and a Mexican food scene that rivals San Diego's. Sedona and Flagstaff add mountain town contrast to the desert.
- Hawaii — if your crew is already cruising from San Francisco or LA, Hawaii itineraries are a natural extension. The islands deliver surf, deep-sea fishing, and golf in a setting that makes the California coast look like a warmup.

California is the state that has everything, and I'm not saying that because I grew up here — I'm saying it because I've spent decades proving it. Build your first weekend around San Diego's breweries and beaches, or San Francisco's food and cruise port, or a Gold Country wine-and-rafting weekend nobody in your group will see coming. You'll be back.
