Guys Trip Ideas In New Hampshire

fall colors train ride in new hampshire

New Hampshire was my winter escape when I lived in Massachusetts. This is a great state for guys looking hit the slopes, spend fall weekend chasing peak color through the White Mountains, and chase a few rounds of summer golf at Waterville Valley resort. This is a state that delivers twelve months a year getaway ideas for men. The Granite State packs serious outdoor range into a compact footprint — you can ski in the morning, hit a brewery in North Conway by afternoon, and be lakeside on Winnipesaukee by dinner.

Where to Go in New Hampshire

New Hampshire's guys trip geography breaks into three zones — the White Mountains spine, the Lakes Region anchored by Winnipesaukee, and the short but punchy seacoast around Portsmouth. Nothing is more than two hours apart.

The White Mountains and North Conway

This is where most New Hampshire guys trips start. North Conway is the basecamp — ski shops, breweries like Tuckerman Brewing and Moat Mountain Smoke House, and access to every major trail and resort. Mount Washington dominates at 6,288 feet. I took the Cog Railway up — the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway, running since 1869 — and drove the Auto Road back down, 7.6 miles of hairpin turns. Both are worth doing at least once.

The Lakes Region

Lake Winnipesaukee is 72 square miles of open water with 288 miles of shoreline and over 200 islands. Wolfeboro on the eastern shore calls itself America's oldest summer resort town. For a father-son trip at any age, renting a boat and spending two days exploring the islands is hard to beat.

Portsmouth and the Seacoast

New Hampshire's coastline is only 18 miles long, but Portsmouth makes every foot count. The brewery scene is real — Portsmouth Brewery was the state's first brewpub, Earth Eagle experiments with wild ingredients, and Cisco Brewers has an outdoor beer garden. Add offshore fishing charters and historic downtown with 17th-century architecture and you have a bachelor party weekend that balances culture with salt air.

What New Hampshire Does Best

New Hampshire punches hard in four categories — winter sports, peak-bagging, water, and scenic road trips.

Skiing and Winter Sports

The state has 19 alpine ski areas. Cannon's first-in-North-America aerial tramway opened in 1938 and its steep terrain still earns respect. Bretton Woods pairs the largest trail count with the Omni Mount Washington Resort for apres-ski most Northeast resorts can't match.

Mountain Adventures

The Appalachian Trail runs 161 miles through New Hampshire including the most demanding sections of the entire footpath. Jericho Mountain State Park has 80-plus miles of ATV trails. Highland Mountain Bike Park in Northfield is New England's dedicated lift-served mountain bike park.

Lake Life

Winnipesaukee gets the headlines, but Squam Lake (where they filmed On Golden Pond) offers a quieter alternative. Ice fishing on Winnipesaukee in winter is its own culture with guided excursions from heated bob houses.

Scenic Drives

The Kancamagus Highway is 34.5 miles through the White Mountain National Forest with zero gas stations and zero distractions. The Mount Washington Auto Road is the oldest man-made tourist attraction in the country, open since 1861.

When to Go

Late November through April is ski season with January and February delivering the most consistent snow. Summer from June through August opens every lake, trail, and golf course — Waterville Valley's course has been playing since 1898. September and early October are the sweet spot for fall foliage, with peak color hitting the White Mountains in the first week of October and the Lakes Region by mid-month.

More New Hampshire Guys Trip Ideas

Beyond the headliners, New Hampshire has enough depth to fill return trips.

  • Rock climbing at Rumney — over 1,000 routes at a world-class sport climbing destination.
  • Gunstock Mountain ZipTour — 1.6-mile zipline reaching 65-plus mph with panoramic lake views.
  • Franconia Notch State Park — hike the Flume Gorge, swim at Echo Lake, ride the aerial tramway up Cannon Mountain.
  • Kayaking the Pemigewasset River — Class II-III rapids through mountain scenery with outfitters in Lincoln.
  • North Conway outlet shopping — tax-free gear runs before heading into the mountains.
  • Omni Mount Washington Resort — the lobby bar with Presidential Range views is worth a stop for drinks after a day in the Whites.
  • Connecticut River fly fishing — trophy brown and rainbow trout near Pittsburg with guided trips.
  • Manchester Fisher Cats baseball — minor league ball in a modern stadium with craft beer options.

Other States Worth Exploring

New Hampshire sits in the middle of the best outdoor corridor in the Northeast.

  • Vermont — if the skiing and brewery culture grabbed your crew, Vermont delivers Killington and Stowe with a food scene that leans harder into farm-to-table and maple everything.
  • Massachusetts — the crew that enjoyed Portsmouth's coastal breweries will find Boston's sports bars and historic pub crawls a natural next trip, plus Cape Cod for beach-and-fishing.
  • Maine — if Winnipesaukee lake life hit the mark, Maine takes it further with Acadia National Park's coastal granite and the Allagash Wilderness Waterway for multi-day paddles.

These are the official tourism sites for some of our favorite New Hampshire destinations:

New Hampshire does not waste your time. Compact enough to hit mountains, lakes, and coast in a long weekend, rugged enough to challenge any crew. Start with North Conway as your White Mountains basecamp, add a day on Winnipesaukee if your crew leans toward water, and drive the Kancamagus at least once — preferably in early October when the whole forest is on fire with color.
