Going on a safari is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience since you’re presented with the opportunity to see some of the world’s most impressive wildlife in their natural surroundings, experience local African culture and visit some of the most beautiful places on the planet. Unlike other types of trips, planning a safari presents its own unique set of challenges, since there’s so much to see and do, and only a limited amount of time to squeeze it all in. Equally challenging is deciding where you want to go and when, as well as what to pack.

Kauai is the island most guys skip. They do Maui, they do the Big Island, post the volcano photos and figure Hawaii is handled. Kauai came out of the Pacific about five million years ago, and the extra time shows in ways the newer islands can not reproduce. Unfortuantely too many folks visit here on a cruise ship or spend the entire vacation at a resort and miss the beautiful landscapes, people, culture, and food that this island has to offer.

Africa has been on my want-to-go list for years and when I heard Colton had just come back from 14 days of it with his dad exploring Africa, I had to know more! Their epic adventure included hunting exotic plains game in South Africa's Eastern Cape. The Royal Gorge Route Railroad runs a 24-mile round trip out of Cañon City, Colorado, through a granite canyon narrow enough in one stretch that the track has to hang off the wall. Most of the scenic railroads that won me over did it with steam - Cass in West Virginia, Mount Washington, the V&T in Nevada - so a modern diesel operation had a case to make. It makes it with a locomotive cab you can buy a seat in, an open-air car that every ticket class can walk into, and a canyon two railroads once fought a two-year war over.

Rajasthan, Ranthambore, the Kerala backwaters, Goa and Ladakh are five regions of one country that share almost nothing with each other, and the flight times between them are longer than most people assume. A group trying to cover all five in two weeks will spend most of that time in airports. Pick two that share a season, book them properly, and India becomes one of the more rewarding guys trips on the board.

Philadelphia is one of the easier American cities to enjoy without drinking, and it has very little to do with willpower. The problem with a sober guys trip is almost never the city and almost never the hour. It is the assumption everybody packs along with them: that the trip is the bar, and that a guy who is not drinking is not really on the trip. Philadelphia is a good place to watch that assumption come apart, because the things worth doing here are things you would want to do sober anyway.
